Pre-Modern Marathon History

RK Notes - I am compiling a list of Road Races from the 19th Century. Modern Marathon History I will assume began with the 1896 Modern Olympic Movement. I have found on occasion events that fit the description of a marathon at the time but not called marathons... but 25 mile races instead.

From the Bangor Commerical (September 13, 1884)...

The twenty-five mile race between the Indian runner White Eagle and David Bennett took place at Montreal, Canada on the 19th inst.

Brewer Labor Day Race - 1940

Brewer Labor Day Race 1940

RK Notes – Here is the Road Race Report of the September 2, 1940 race that Clarence DeMar competed in Brewer. Article written by John Wentworth – News Sports Writer (Page 12).

Clarence DeMar Just Likes To Run

Great Marathoner Every Day Fellow

At 52 Hopes to Keep running for 20 more years; has simple advice for youngsters.

The flimsy running uniform was stuck to his body. Rain drops and beads of sweat stood on his forehead, and his thinning hair was tousled. The 52-year old Clarence DeMar, one the greatest marathoners of modern times, looked tired – but happy.

Three Tips with Stuart Jenkins

Stuart Jenkins

Stuart Jenkins of ran the *official* third fastest Boston Marathon by a resident Mainer - (2:21.37 in 1982). Mr. Jenkins also tied for winning the 1981 Paul Bunyan Marathon in 1981. He currently is the CEO of Principa College in Elsah, Illinois.

RK Special Notes...Stuart's fastest and perhaps the fastest marathon by a Mainer at Boston I have found written second hand was 2:18.46, 4 seconds away from qualifying in the Olympics - I'm not sure of the year - but Stuart explains why I haven't found it yet in the record books. I'm going to do some further research on this.

Musterds History

RK Notes - This was something that I found today that I thought was very interesting for history about Maine Running Clubs. It was mentioned in the June 3, 1980 Bangor Daily News written by Bob Haskell in his On The Run article/section. It's about a race in Camden that was run called the Reebok/Camden 10,000 Meter Road Race. This particular year Bob Hodge (29.33) and Joan Benoit were the overall champions. When I get back to it - I'll post more later...
