Weekend Framework:

As with most Eden Athletics activities, this weekend's details will be determined by individual interest. Please read and reply here to indicate runs you'd plan on either leading or joining. As individuals post their own activities for the weekend, others will join in. Trust us, it works. Here's how we begin:

  • Friday late afternoon, perhaps timed to coincide with the Downeast Bicycle Club's group ride at 4:30, we'll hold a casual run around the 6-mile Eagle Lake loop. Evening, there will be an informal and indefinitely on-going social hour at Jack Russell's Brew Pub, which will serve as the compliment to this website as a clearinghouse for information on all weekend activities.
  • Saturday morning, we'll plan on various runs and perhaps a 'Popover Relay' on the carriage roads in the area of the Jordan Pond House and Little Long Pond. For those interested, these may culminate in a fast downhill mile on the Stanley Brook Road, and sometime around noon we'll encourage everyone to come to Seal Harbor Beach for a restorative soak in the ocean and a picnic on the beach. Runners wishing to run particular distances or paces may post here to find the right company and locations
  • Saturday afternoon, there may be numerous opportunities for recuperation -- kayaking, bicycling, hiking, or just hanging out for longer at the beach. Again, just post your interest here.
  • Saturday evening, there will be some combination of barbecue and potluck at 42 Ledgelawn Avenue in Bar Harbor, co-hosted by the downtown runners of Eden Athletics.
  • Sunday morning, beginning as early as you wish, there will be a range of runs, rides, and hikes all culminating at the summit of Cadillac Mountain. One-way runs and round trips of any distance are both possible. Nearby Eagle Lake and downtown Bar Harbor are both likely starting points.
  • Weekend-long: We encourage everyone at some point during the weekend to take a run around Eagle Lake and afterward to report your time on a chart that we'll keep at Jack Russell's. By Sunday evening, we'll report the weekend's best times in every age group.
  • Sunday late afernoon, we can re-cap and celebrate at Jack Russell's and issue any awards deemed appropriate.
  • Beyond these listings, our colleagues in the Downeast Bicycle Club will hold their regular weekend rides. So if you'd rather ride than run, you'll find appropriate company. Regular club rides leave from the Eagle Lake parking lot on Fridays at 4:30PM and from the Bar Harbor Bike Shop at the intersection of Cottage Street and Eden Street on Saturdays at 8:00AM and on Sundays at 9:00AM

...So, now let's hear from you all. How would you like to fill out this weekend? Where and when would you like to run? Let's discuss it here.

10.9M @ 7:30 pace @ 9:30 a.m. Sat.

I'd like to propose a run leaving from Jordan Pond House Parking lot and doing a loop around Bubble Pond, Eagle Lake and back to Jordan Pond. Then it's off to the picnic at Seal Harbor Beach at Noon.

Keep running!

Stretching and Yoga at Seal Harbor @ 12:30 Sat.

Here's a chance to work on your running agility. Has your ITB been bothering you? Let's give it a good old fashion stretchin'. I will lead a runner's oriented stretching/yoga class which should last about a half hour. Bring a big beach towel or yoga pad.

Keep running!

Thanks for offering this

I've been meaning to stretch after runs for about three years now...

10 @10 @10

Saturday. Starting from Jordan Pond House. Depending on interest we can do a shorter run. My intent is to provide for a slower paced run - distance is negotiable.

And then join Steve's stretching group at 12:30.

can we start at 9 - i have to

can we start at 9 - i have to be at work at 11... if not, it's cool. i just like running with company!

I am willing

to start at 9. Maybe if people out there can let me know what interest there is in this 10 minute pace run we can see what works best. It would likely be cooler at 9! If there is enough interest, we can have two 10 minute paced runs - 9 am and 10 am

My thought is to start at Jordan Pond House (signpost 15); go 16 then 17 towards Day Mountain, make a left towards 7 (Bubble Pond), turn left at bottom of Eagle Lake to number 8 and then head home from number 10 on that really cool downhill. Which if my math is correct and the map is correct would be 8.3 miles.

Run MDI 10@9

Amy & Maggie, Tom and I will be there and are planning to run 10 on Saturday morning. 9AM (or even earlier) is better for us.

July 1 from JPH

I am planning on running Saturday morning too. Any time is okay with me though I prefer earlier. My pace will be between 9 and 10 minutes per mile.

I may also try to go up Cadillac on Sunday morning if my legs have any life in them. I would love company if any slower paced runners are interested in joining me. I have never run up Cadillac so this might be crazy talk.

You have more than enough

steam to make it up Cadillac. I promise.

Saturday AM

Karen - let me know what time you are running on Saturday, July 1st, as I will come along. You can definitely do Cadillac.. No Problem.. BETH

9:00 it is!

I'll see you there:)

9:30 July 1 run

Note change of time to 9:30 which is the time the first Explorer Bus gets to JPH. Hope this works for the most people interested.

9:30 is fine with me

I hope that works for everyone else too.

Brian's 'Run MDI' weekend plan

Here's mine. All welcome to join in for any part.

Friday,

  • 4:30 PM: Starting from Eagle Lake parking lot: 6-mile Eagle Lake loop: 6:50-7:45 pace. Soak in Duck Brook or Eagle Lake stream outlet afterward.
Saturday,
  • 10:00AM: Starting from Jordan Pond House: 8.5 mile Jordan Pond-Bubble Pond Loop: ~7:30-8:00 pace. (To start and be coordinated with Steve's group)
  • 11:30AM (or 12:00 if there's interest from Steve's group): Starting from intersection of Park Loop Road and Stanley Brook Road: Downhill mile: ~6:00 pace, followed by soak at Seal Harbor Beach and picnic.
  • 12:00: Picnic at Seal Harbor Beach
  • 12:30 PM. Stretching with Steve.
  • Evening: potluck on Ledgelawn

Sunday,

  • 8:00AM: Starting at MDI YMCA: 20K run up and down Cadillac Mountain: Pace: 8:00 pace or slower on the way up, proportionally quicker on the way down.
[Intermediate points to join on way up: Park gate from Eagle Lake Road: ~8:15, intersection of Park Loop and Cadillac Mountain Road: ~8:25. Cadillac summit: ~9:00AM.] Soak off the Bar Harbor town pier afterward.
  • 10:30 or so: Breakfast at Cafe This Way

Great Start to a Sunday

I have hiked Cadillac, driven Cadillac and back in the early 80's even rode my mother's pea green ten speed up Cadillac. Never had the pleasure of running up Cadillac, I think that I may have to change that this weekend.

5AM may be a bit early for me but I would like to jump on board for the 8AM Sunday Morning run from the "Y" if there is still a group heading out at that time????

Big Bike Loop Tour

If there is interest I would lead a Sunday afternoon bike trip on the carriage roads. Tentative plan is to start and end from the vistors center for people that want to make the whole trip. Witch Hole-Eagle-Aunt Betty's-Around Mtn-Jordan Pond-Bubble-Eagle-Witch Hole. There are lots of spots along the route where people can join or get off utilyzing the free bus system (they have bike racks). Details to follow if people are interested, so you got to let me know.

Piggybacking off other plans

I'll be at Eagle Lake Friday, and will be nowhere near Brian's pace. I am certain I'll have the jogger with me, and am flexible about pace--from 8:45s to 10:45s depending on who shows.

Saturday I'll be at the Jordan Pond House, maybe sans jogger. I'll start with Steve/Brian/et al, and pace will be determined by how many people I'm pushing. I'll do the downhill mile for comic relief; I'm not a miler. : ) I'm definitely stretching with Steve, and then I have to hit the road.

Sunday I'll be running solo, sadly, missing all you guys. Hopefully around Mousam Lake; anyone live down that way?

Cycling Events

Just wanted to follow up on the cycling events mentioned in the RUN MDI schedule for all of you who might like to get out on your bike over the RUN MDI weekend. The Downeast Bike Club will be holding three of our regular rides that weekend. Descriptions are below. Everyone is welcome!!

Friday, 4:30 pm -- From Eagle Lake Parking lot (the one next to the bridge): This is a no-drop Carriage Road Ride between 6 and 12 miles. The pace is casual. Great for burning a few calories before going out for a lobster dinner! We ride even if it is raining a little bit...but not if it is a downpour or a thunderstorm. I lead this ride and if you don't know me you can spot me because I will be wearing a Bar Harbor Bike Shop jersey and a white bike helmet. I ride a yellow Trek mountain bike.

Saturday, 8:00 am -- From the Bar Harbor Bike Shop on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor. Just look for the cyclists gathering in front of the bike store. They are a friendly lot so don't be shy about showing up and introducing yourself! The ride is at a moderate pace for anywhere between 20 and 30 miles. This ride is geared for road bikes and the course usually includes a number of challenging hills. This ride is recommended for working off blueberry pancakes.

Sunday, 9:00 am -- From the Bar Harbor Bike Shop on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor. The Sunday morning ride usually breaks up into 2 groups...a fast group and a moderate pace group. This ride often is longer than 30 miles although there are usually plenty of "bail out" points to make the ride shorter if there is a time crunch. The ride is geared for road bikes and will no doubt include a bunch of challenging hills.

Sunday afternoon-- Sounds like KJ is willing to lead a ride on the Carriage Roads on Sunday afternoon (see post above) so get in touch with him if you want to sleep in on Sunday and get outside on your trail/mountain bike later in the day!

Note that all of these rides go through at least part of Acadia National Park so be sure you have a Park pass. This year you can go to the fee station on the Ocean Drive entrance to the Park and let them know that you have a Park pass in advance. They'll put your name on a list so that when you next ride your bike on the Park Loop Road past the fee station you can just give them your name and they'll know that you have already paid your entrance fee.

If you have any questions about the three Downeast Bike club rides described above feel free to ask me here on this forum or call the Bar Harbor Bike Shop: 288-3886 (email: bhbike@acadia.net).

RUN MDI: Sunday schedule change

Note two recent alterations proposed to the Sunday schedule.

To better celebrate any prospects of sunrise, we have advanced the Cadillac climb to reach the summit at 6:00AM.

This frees up a little more of the morning so all interested at 8:00 AM can run on the western side of the Island in the Echo Lake / Lurvey Spring vicinity. Thanks to Rae and John for proposing this.

Any objections?

Against all odds...

Craig and I may make it up from Boston today. If so, we will come to the Jack Russell and hope to connect with folks there.
