Dave is awesome...

3 years ago Dave did Lake Placid in 11:15, so 10:38 is a big time course PR. It is about 10 minutes off his best time ever, which was on an easier course in Couer d'Alene last year. Both the bike and the run in Lake Placid are pretty brutal. I talked to him last night, he sounded well. He heard someone cheering for him on one of the hills on the bike, and also heard someone cheering him at the finish - thanks Michelle, Britt and Julie! It will be your turn next year.... Dave's time in Lake Placid in 2007 got him 11th place and a Kona slot. It's amazing he can go so much faster and be 24th. It is doubtful that the Kona slots will roll down that far. But that shouldn't take away from the amazing race he had. He has worked extremely hard, let me tell you!

awesome is right

Mary, it was very exciting to see him finish and be able to cheer for him. We even wrote his name in the middle of the hill where he heard us cheering, hope he saw it. I also ran into him this morning on Main Street. He looked well rested. I only spoke to him a few seconds as I was rushing to fetch my picture ID.

Thanks Y'all Back from Lak

Thanks Y'all

Back from Lake Placid now with another Ironman Medal.
A brief race report:

The swim was the roughest scrum I've ever experienced. Tough physical beatings on.
All that churned up water with adrenaline really leads to fast times. I am very psyched with a sub 1:05 swim, my best ever for IM.

The bike too went well but I may have overcooked a bit (see run) the second lap. The wind tends to pick up there in the mountains by afternoon and it was direct headwinds for the last 11 mile climb back to Placid. I wish then I had another gear on the back cassette, like 25 instead of my regular 23. I may have been able to spin up and not fry the quads?

The run execution was fine the first lap, ~8 min/mile pace, my goal. Then things just went. Not like hitting the wall, but slowing Less and less, energy just running out of me. I found I HAD to walk the steepest hill sections but managed to get going again each time, which all of you who have hit the wall in endurance events know isn't easy. The last 10k was true survival shuffle or 10 min/mi. pace.

I missed a Kona slot by 17 minutes in my age group this year but I'm very pleased overall as all three split times, plus both transitions were better than 2007 when I qualified for Kona.

My trip was solo this year as the Family were tied to other stuff. I did see the "Dr Dave" chalked on the road and really appreciate all the thoughts race day and since, here and wherever. Thanks.

Great job Dave!

You and Mary are both incredible.

Social Stroll on the West side of EL

Got to see John & Lisa Helm, Donna, Judy, & Brian on this beautiful morning.

Dave, congratulations on an awesome Ironman!

7+ in Bath

Beautiful day out. The breeze is pushing away any midday heat that could cause a problem.

Congratulations, Dave. That's some great work.

wow what an accomplishment. Thanks for the great report Mary.

8.85mi for me this morning...missed my long run yesterday, but had a great kayak after the rain stopped.

Congratulations Dave

It sounds like an incredible performance, and inspiring. All the more so, knowing that so much training and preparation precedes it. Very, very, very cool.

5 mi @ lunch-time with Mark and Greg S. Good, short-(ish), fast-(ish) run to follow up on the longer sojourn yesterday.
