Is the only way to remove a callus going to the DR?

I have a callus on my foot that just won't go away. I tried the callus remover stuff but it took away all the surrounding skin. I try trimming it myself (ewww) but it comes right back and is painful. Does anyone have any ideas? I really don't want to go to the Dr.....

Thanks,
Suzanne

Callus

yes, I'd say if you've tried the over the counter stuff and it hasn't worked, that the doctor would do it.

removing callus

I used a pumice stone after soaking, and after a few times it was smooth as a babie's but. John

The agony of de-feet

One of the (few) bad things about runners is that they often have some pretty gnarly feet. The first (and last) time I went for a pedicure, the poor girl recoiled in horror as I took off my socks. (laugh) She then proceed to file off my calluses, and boy was I sorry on my next long run! You need some callus for protection, or you'll get monster blisters. But sometimes they do get a little out of control, and can get pretty painful. Filing, as opposed to trimming, once a week or so seems to work for me. Pumice stones are great, or I use a file that looks like a cheese grater, made by Dr. Scholl's, I think. Just don't get too carried away...there's not much of you left to start with!
