What's YOUR run?
Might try to get out later. 6 miles easy
of carriage roads around Seal Harbor. I had no idea where we were, but there were lots of hills. Gary (in his dapper new knee socks) seemed to know his way, and based time, we decided to call it around 12 miles. Nice group, including Becky and Ryan O'K and Tim G.
and run on the grass paths, and walk into the ocean afterwards. What a beautiful day!
I spent the weekend with my aunt, uncle, and 3 cousins, so there has been lots of swimming in their new pool and I managed to drag myself out of bed before everyone woke up this morning to get a run in. I ran around a lake near their house; the change of scenery was wonderful. Estimating the distance based on how long it took me... but probably 8 to 8.5 mi.

20K for me including the Cobscook 10K race. This is really a gem of a race that a lot more people ought to know about. There's even a potluck in the park right afterward. The course is point to point and shaped quite a bit like Beach to Beacon. The first mile is way fast and last 1.2 is nothing but relentless hills on gravel.
I'll post the results as soon as I have them -- probably this evening. But the top finishers went something like this: 1)Jeremy Lisee 2) Matt Woida 3) Jim Newett 4) Tommy McWalters 5) Brian Hubbell 6) David Dent 7) Judd Esty-Kendall
Kathleen Bell was the top woman and I believe she, Karl Johnson, and Chris* Almy were all in the group behind Judd -- not sure of the exact finishing order.
Ty-Daniel, Tom Kirby, Bill Pinkham, Robin Emery, and Tom Miller were all there too. I'm probably missing others.
I felt like I had a pretty good race (despite being over a minute and a half slower than at Orrington and having to come to a complete stop briefly at mile 3 to give the evil eye to a black dog that suddenly came hauling after me) but it my have been at the cost of a hamstring strain. Ice and ibuprofen now.
Say, hey, JC.
Sounds like you all had a great race...congratulations, you guys! Eager to see the times. Was it warm there?
BTW, Alyie, David Dent is the guy we met on the train. I think he did the 15K at Sugarloaf, but I didn't see him.
Yeah, David did the 15K this year at Sugarloaf -- and Boston. He lives way downeast and is training for a fall ironman. In fact he was leaving directly from Cobscook to drive down to Maryland's Eastern Shore to do a half-ironman in Cambridge (next weekend I think).
He ought to be a Crow.
And, no it wasn't too warm for the race -- overcast, with a slight headwind for the first three miles. Tailwind from 3.5 to 5. Just hills after that. Sun came out for the picnic.
I "ran" into him on the bus as we were waiting for the race to start.
that side of the 'island rats maze' is the best kept secret in running land....shhhh! Good run, good fun, silly socks! 12+ it was!
Don't run track Paula, Did you see that pile of ladies bodies falling like bowling pins at the Pre meet today? How bout Alan Webbs AR in the 2 mile 8:11:48! 8:07 won it, fastest ever in North America.
David We have never met but consider joining this club you'll love what it does for your running, sense of humor and taste for cold beer.

nice work Brian, Matt and all the rest today, anybody heard from JC and Bunker?
Sorry, I tried to call but nobody home.
Race was interesting. No ones going to believe me until they see the sunburn I got, but it was 88 degrees at the race and 92 just after. I sat inside the casino just inside where it starts with ice on me and just getting my temp. down. I ran about 1/2 mile warmup in this 100 meter shaded section. So I went out nice and slow, 5:00 for the first mile. Found myself out of the top 50 overall at that point, but I pressed on. Followed those up with a couple 5:15, but people were dropping like flies, and I was passing some guys who I'd never beaten before. By the time we got to the 400 meter dirt dog track to finish on I was about 30th place, and managed to get a few more by the end for 26th place and they didn't even seem to care or notice I was passing them. 16:04 for me, and I'm ok with it, hot, no shade, and probably still a little tired from other races, I seemed like I was the only one happy about my performance.
Anyways, Mike B. and Andy were running together just ahead. About 800 meters to go, they were together in about 18th and 19th place. We had all gone out slow and people were comig back in bunches. By the end, Mike B. found himself in 8th place with about 15:30, Ethan Hemphill was about 15:35, Andy Spaulding was 15:42, Mike Payson was about 16:19, but was just coming back from a month layoff and since Mike Bunker can't score for the team our 5th guy Steve Ballou who ran an awesome race came in in about 17:00. We were 4th team, but with Mike we would have been 2nd.
What's scary is Evan, Andy, Ethan, Keelyn, Mike P., and myself will be at the whirlaway 10-k in 3 weeks. That is also the top 5 Maiers at B2B last year and Keenyl was 7th, so essentially 6 sub 32:30 guys. Plus a couple other top 10 mainers joining us.
It was great to see Steve V. He was kind enough to make sure we scored as a team when we were first left out of the team results.
Anyways, Great job at the 10-k everyone. Haven't seen the times, but looks like you guys ran great.
Report from the ocean state.
Man, JC, that sounds pretty brutal even if it was for only 16 minutes. Glad I stayed local and near the sea breezes.
Still don't have the Cobscook results -- I think Jonathan has to type them up -- but I wanted to add two other funny stories about today's race. First is that the 10K and 5K start together and this year there were quite a few kids doing the 5K. They were very obedient and were the first to line up when Jonathan called the runners to the starting line. As a result they made a pretty solid line across the front which we all stayed politely behind.
It wasn't until a few moments before the start when Jon mentioned that probably only the 5:40/mi and better runners ought to be right at the front, that the kids looked back, saw the field that was looming over them, and scattered to the back and sides like tadpoles who had been spooked by a shadow.
Then, at about 2-miles, there were three horses in a bordering field, who, upon seeing Jeremy, Matt, and Jim leading the race, galloped along the fence with them for a few hundred meters as if they wanted nothing more than to come along.
I think this may have been what excited the dog too. I hear he went after Jeremy first. But Jeremy dropped him so he had to settle for me.
Wow, I can't imagine running--much less racing--in 90 degree weather. Hope there was something cold to drink at the finish. Nice run!
eeeeeeee. JC that sounds like so much fun. Glad you survived. Good running! Did you see that new HS record 4:09 that Taye kid is a freshman and his bro is a Junior and ran 4:10. Might we see a sub 4:00 HS mile in Me someday?
Ryan O'Keefe on Sun run said bro Brendon ran a 3:59 split in some invitational road race down in NC? or was it Tenn? Ryan said he'd be running with you and big E all summer
I saw that mile, very impressive, Both Taye's and Giddings ran really well. Levi Miller also ran 4:16.
I ran with Ryan a couple Sundays ago and he's in great shape. It's too bad we can't get Bunker out of work on Sunday Mornings to join us. With Larry biking with us we'll have some killer runs. Hopefully my legs come around soon, since the loaf every run has been a struggle.
Congrats; that type of heat is HORRIBLE.
203 runners broke seven minute pace. Out of 419 total? That's not bad.
Nice job you guys. That was a deep field.
love the weatha! i can count the days left with my fingers...yee haa! can't wait to return to the island for a while... EG
Cobscook 1-mi/5K/10K results
Rhody 5K results
Great job in the heat-great individual efforts and good team finish. We were in the area and ran with our old running club TVFR. Said hi to one Crow but didn't see the others as we really don't know everyone yet. Why is it the only two hot days so far this year have been the Boston Marathon and a Grand Prix race?
Don Bell
who in hell dreamed up that MDI Marathon course? I ran the last 10k tonight in the cold rain w/ stiff headwinds. In a word I'm sure glad I hadn't run the preceding 20m. alittle over 40 min with 2m easy after.Temp readout on my car said 45 degrees in Manset.
