Acadia Running Suggestions - Please Help

I'm visiting from out of town and looking for a nice 18 mile run along the Acadia National park Carriage Roads. Does anybody have any suggestions? Would the Around Mountain Loop with the Eagle Lake Loop work well? Are these roads very hilly? This will be my longest distance so far as part of my marathon training, so I'm looking for something pretty easy.

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions,

Rex

where to find 18 miles on the carriage roads

Rex,

The Around Mountain loop is a great one, but -- not to dissuade you -- as it reaches the highest elevation of any of the carriage loops, "pretty easy" isn't the best description.

If you'd rather have something flatter, I'd recommend the loop below. (If you haven't found it already, take a look at our topic Where to Run on MDI: CARRIAGE ROADS -- it has all the roads and intersections labeled)

  • 17.6 mi. Eagle, Aunt Betty's, Giant Slide, Hadlock, Amphitheater, Bubble, Eagle. (Intersections 6,9,11,13,18,19,20,21,14,15,16,17,7,6).

There are four access points from the auto roads -- Eagle Lake, Upper Hadlock, Jordan Pond, and Bubble Pond -- so you can start at any of those and use the others to stash water if you like.

If you want company, especially if you do it on a Sunday, give us a post here ahead of time.

And let us know afterward how it went for you.

Thanks and where is inset Map B?

Brian,

Thanks for the caution and for the recommended run. The loop you suggested looks great! Unfortunately, I couldn't find a blow up of inset Map B with the marked intersections. Am I missing something? If that doesn't work out I may just run the 3 x Eagle loop. I'm either going to run on Thursday or Friday morning at about an 8:30 - 9:00 pace.

3xeagle lake

3 laps around eagle lake is my favorite for a good 18-miler. That way you can have water and snacks every 6 miles and get a good sense of pace along your way. It's not as bad as many think.

Similar but different

Carriage roads are fantastic running, but you are not going to avoid hills.

Like Judson's suggestion, I will park at Eagle Lake parking area and run three loops -
Eagle Lake, 5.9 mi, one big hill
Aunt Betty Pond loop (west side of Eagle Lake), 6.0mi, and 2 big hills
Witch Hole Pond w/ Paridise Hill, 6.4mi, hilly but not as big as the other loops.
