Ed Shepherd Captures Rockland Holiday Race, July 4, 1950Ed Shepherd Captures Rockland Holiday Race Putting on a burst of speed midway through the final lap, Ed Shepherd of Gorham won the 10 mile race here in Thomaston, July 4th in the time of 58 minutes, 56 seconds. He finished nearly three minutes before Kenneth Low of Rockland, his chief contender through the championship grind. Shepherd, who had been running in distance races for nearly 16 years, finished strongly, well ahead of the other gridsters. Other finishers included Low, 61 minutes, 13 seconds; Bruno Mazzeo of Rockland, 63:32; Phil Albert of Gorham, 64:02; Aiden Potter, Gorham, 64:31; Reginald Smart, Pittsfield, 64:32; Herman McCutcheon, Waterville, 66:43; Sam Oullette, Ashland, 69:05; Ed Oullette, Ashland, 69:30; Dave Mazzeo, Rockland, 72:49; Larry Smith, Rockland, 74; Robert Walker, Gorham, 77:02; Richard Smith, Jay, 79:38; Don Larkin, Owl's Head, 85:45. Bert and Earl Farrington, both of Jay, failed to finish. The race was dominated by the fleet runners from Gorham who received their only serious opposition from several distance stars of Rockland. One of the pre-race favorites, Bruno Mazzeo of Rockland; developed a charley horse part way through the race but still finished third. Mazzeo once finished seventh in the Boston Marathon.
