...And some days it all just comes together.
Oh, yeah......
I can't wait to hear how you do. Just about to get underway, how exciting.
Remember the running shirt I found for you one year I think it went something like: "For every winner there is at least a dozen loosers odds are you're one of them" Now that's what you where when you want to be cocky. Wonder what I'll come up with this year for my Southbound friend? But the odds are against the gathering of great talent that will be at the T-Trot today with all of the invitations out today we should be a group photo. Later
Happy Birthday JC, Good luck at the Turkey Trot everyone and good luck in Philly, Chris G. Run Crows Run Mama Crow
Go Chris Go!
Forgot it was that day. Yup, you gave me that shirt last year Phil. I think my birthday was the day after the trot last year. So I was 26 when I raced. This year I'll be 28. Skipped a year, that's weird.
Ed just called and said Chris G. has gotten to the 8-mile mark in 54:04. That's 6:45 pace I believe. Go Chris...
...heading for a 1:28:30 first half. Think Chris is cranked up much?
She's in a pack of 14 going through the halfway in 1:29:15, and Ed says she's looking really good and comfortable.
Ed doesn't think he'll be able to give an update until after she finishes, and I'm going to be on the road headed to race. Is there someone I can call to post her final time?
Go Chris G.
a half marathon PR for Chris G?
...She ran 1:30:06 this year at BH.
If you find out you can call me. I can post it. I am leaving around 11:30.
If I get the call I'll call you first thing.
Go Chris!
Looks like a beautiful day for racing all around. Can't wait to see everyone up in Brewer.
Atta girl Chris.
That is a fantastic time!! Holy cow, you should be bursting with pride!
of you Chris! Great job!
Really a great achievement and reward for all your hard training.
Way to go Chris! Amazing. You ran a very tough and smart race. And clearly you managed to avoid all offered anvils. Super. Perfect. You should be very proud of yourself. I celebrated your success (after a 20 miler) at the Waffle House. I may have to go back!
Wow, that's fantastic! Wish I could have seen the whole gorey thing. We'll just have to wait for that race report. Now let's hear from the Turkey Trotters in Brewer.
Happy BDay JC The golf course is at least open space and a good place to sled when the snow comes. Good going Chris you worked hard for your finish.
Fantastic result for Chris! Congratulations!!!

More results to come. Great job all!
That didn't work out like planned. I was so focused for the past 2-months leading up to the race and for the 15+ minutes of the race I totally lost it. Jeff went out in a conservative 4:40-4:41 with a pack of about 10 of us about 10 seconds back at the mile. Why the hell I wasn't up with Jeff is beyond me. I have no idea what I was thinking. I've gone out faster in 10-k's. Jeff ran uchallenged the whole time and ran great. He really surprized everyone. After a brief surge by a few of us in the second mile, I fell apart. I didn't feel tired or out of breath, I just lost all my focus and started thinking of things I shouldn't have been in the middle of the race. Anyways, 7th place. Worst placing from me in Eastern Maine since 1990 something. I'll be lucky if I get to go to Zap now after they see those results. Lucky for me I get to race in 4 days down in Manchester. Got to get focused, especially since all the Zap guys will be at Manchester.
As for the field. Fun to have all those guys come and we all made a big mistake by not going out with Jeff. But wow, the top 20 times in the race are crazy. We definetly rewrote the top 200 alltime times they keep track of. Jeff has the new Course record for the time being, congrats.
I was heading out and they all were heading in. I passed JC and the others at their two mile mark and the clock said something like 10:16. They were amazingly fast.
I finished 30 seconds slower than last year which seems to be a theme. I get slower each year.
Oh well. I love it. The weather was beautiful. The people terrific. And race director's idea to give a turkey to the 64th finisher each year was inspirational.
Nice talking to you Brian and Alyie. Where can I find my official time?
5:37 5:56 5:48 0:35 ________ 17:56
Felt about even pacing to me. But really there were two races going on in my view today. What seemed most apparent was that there were a bunch of younger runners who steadily faded and came back. But the real race was the underlying one with Glendon, Chris, and (barely within range) Newell. Although Cassie eventually got by him (and quite a few others), Newell lead steadily. Chris went out for the first mile with Cassie. Glendon matched me and then, without even letting me realize it, completely dropped me just before the two mile mark. It wasn't until we crossed the overpass that it occurred to me that I could catch Chris. But I made my move a little too soon and got his attention too early just before the crest of the hill. Knowing I kick, he immediately surged and put himself out of my range. I think I was just what he needed to wake back up. On the other hand, his presence gave me the impetus probably to seal another sub 18:00. So it all works out.
Finished sixth in the 40-49 group. I'm definitely looking forward to turning 50.
4:49 4:56 5:12 :35
Finished 5th in the 20-29 ago group, I'm not looking forward to turning 30.
how you know your splits, since I had your watch???
They have digital clocks at the mile marks, and I remembered what the time was at each. That's how focused I was.
4:49, 9:45,
Then 5:47 for the last 1.1, but since I wasn't running that fast I figured I only ran the last .1 in about 35 seconds, thus a 5:12.
5:01, 5:14, then 5:45 for the last 1.1 (5:14 pace).
I'm pretty pleased with that last 1.1, considering: a) the hill and b) I felt like I was dying.
I ran with that speedy 16-year old most of the last 1.1 miles, and that helped, as he kept a nice, steady pace. Plus, when I turned the corner and saw that sub-16 was a possibility, that put a little extra kick in my stride (although evidently not enough kick - if I coulda just run one second faster...).
Ahh, next time.
Anyway, it was a beautiful day, and fun to be able to watch the lead pack battle it out. They put on a good race up there in Brewer.
Oh, another good thing that happened. Someone kept Mike from winning the race, so at least the sub5 series is settled. Hee hee.

He ran along side my vehicle and looked up my time for me! Nice time today, my son pr'd by a minute. I'm happy with my time, I've done better but haven't raced for some time. Mike Bickford ran his first 5 k in 19:32, nice place to start! So proud of Patrick, he was the only one on the pemetic team to run today.
Did anyone see the turkey trot results from Southern Maine today? The top 19 at Brewer would have won that race.
Next year we've got to make Brewer even more competitive.

Awesome race, bask in that post-marathon glow!!!
with Mark - Duck Brook, around Eagle Lake, and then back.
My knee hurts again. I know I need to take some time off and let it heal, but I hate not running.
It was the shoes!! Plus your hard work, persistence, focus and ability. Good for you and congratulations.
Well, had to check to see how my favorite runner did... Chris, unreal, I can't wait to hear more about the race from you!!!! I hope Henry was there, I am sure Ed was!! I will talk to you soon! JC, nice race!! I love seeing you get to race with other runners your speed, ZAP is going to be wonderful for you!! To all you other crazy runners, hello & hope all is well!!
Chris Torrey
As I stood at the starting line, I realized that, for the first time ever before a race, the butterflies were due to excitement as opposed to nervousness. The workouts had all gone well, the weather was perfect, and a cursory systems check revealed that I felt remarkably good. Even the pain in my piriformis, which nags chronically (to varying degrees) for as long as I can remember, had disappeared over the course of the last week, as if by magic. With strains of MFSB lingering in my head, I headed into the streets of Philadelphia.
The first half was mostly a blur. I was thrilled to see Ellen and Bill at Mile 5, cheering maniacally and waving their banner for me. At Mile 10, we passed through the gates into Fairmount Park, and above the din of music blaring through loudspeakers, I heard the announcer say "...and here comes Christine Ganz from Mount Desert...er, uh..." MAINE!! I shouted and pumped my arms overhead to the cheers of the onlookers.
I reached the half a bit earlier than planned, but not by enough to make me worry. The hills were behind me, and all that remained was a 20K out and back, first upstream, then down along the river. As I rounded the cone marking the turnaround, I realized that all I had left was one quick trip around Eagle Lake...a flattened Eagle Lake! I've never felt more relaxed at this point during a marathon, and one by one, the miles ticked by. I passed lots of people, each of whom offered words of encouragement as I went.
I missed the 26 Mile mark, but knew by my watch that I was almost finished, and sure enough, rounded the corner just as the clock read 2:59:00. A quick hundred meters more, and there it was...a sub-3 hour marathon! I still can't believe it, and don't think my feet have touched the ground yet.
Thank you all for the support and energy you sent along...I felt every bit of it every step of the way!
P.S. Congratulations to all you Turkey Trotters! Great job!!
P.S.S. Not sure if I'll have a chance to check in again until we're back home, so have a great Thanksgiving, everyone!
I just read your report outloud to my 21 year old daughter (she ran with EG at MDIHS) and we were both deeply moved and thrilled by your accomplishment. For 9 days, I have been in a horrible depressing running slump but you have reminded me of the thrill, so worth working towards, when all your work and dreams come together. If I can hold onto that feeling I know I'll snap out of this. Thank you and congratulations.
Here are my marathon splits:
1 6:40 2 6:52 3 6:41 4 6:51 5 6:52 6 6:50 (10K 41:27) 7 6:49 8 6:56 (hill) 9 6:39 10 7:04 (hill) 11 6:51 12 6:44 13 6:50 (13.1 1:29:23) 14 6:52 15 6:42 16 6:55 17 6:50 18 6:54 19 6:54 20 6:56 21 6:48 22 6:59 23 6:53 24 6:55 25 6:51 26.2 8:21
looks like you set a few new PR's in there enroute.
your watch? Well done!
Would you like my lucky purple socks, too? :-)
;)
could have used your lucky purple socks this weekend!
