Seven mi

The weather was relatively calm this morning. It's supposed to get really wild this afternoon. The forecast

HIGH WIND WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO MIDNIGHT EST

Today...Rain. Strong winds with highs in the upper 40s. Southeast winds 20 to 30 mph...Increasing to 35 to 45 mph this afternoon. Gusts up to 70 mph.

GUSTS UP TO 70 MPH!

An adventurous person might go for a run along Ocean drive this afternoon : )

wind and waves

Seas are supposed to build to 15-20 foot waves this afternoon!

kowabunga!

if only the h20 was about 10-15 deg. warmer! (although it's been awhile since i surfed 15 foot waves--and i was so terrified last time i did i am probably waaaaay too chicken now!)

SurfDawg Ed

surfing!!!

LOVE surfing. I've never done anything that big though.

surfing rules!

it is really the ultimate sport--it takes incredible endurance (when the waves are big), split second timing and judgement, amazing balance and coordination, and extreme focus (ie. when you're scared out of your mind). plus, it's so spiritual and relaxing to be out on the ocean at dawn or at sunset--just you and the waves. i miss it sooooo much! I think i need a trip to California soon..... : )

I learned to surf

at Higgin's Beach this summer. I saw a bunch of guys surfing and just would sit and watch them, and then when they were done, bat my eyelashes, smile, and ask them to teach me. We finally rented a surfboard from a sports shop for the week and figured it out.
Good place to learn, as the waves aren't huge but they're big enough that you can get up and ride them for a little ways. Ian picked it up immediately, took me a little longer.

Wind run

We should have a run. Anyone want to run an easy 5-6 later this afternoon? We can drive to Otter Creek and run with the wind back into Bar Harbor, then drive back to get cars. fun... Bring your wind jackets and lets set sail.

Honey

Good luck to Honey. It was devastating when we lost our golden 13 years ago. I still miss him!

I have nothing to add to edenometer for yesterday. Rest day although quite hectic.

10 cubed (10 at 10 at 10 minute pace) on Saturday I hope? Meet at Eagle Lake again?

guess who I met...

I ran 5mi on the treadmill at the fitness center here, then while I was 'llipticalling (55 minutes), I saw a guy walk in with an MDI Marathon shirt, so of course I walked over and introduced myself. His name is Adam Zukowski, and ran a 3:26 this year -- MDI was his first marathon. We might start running together soon :)

Doing 5 miles felt fine. I don't feel like I've lost that much leg strength. I emailed Mark the other day to see what I'm supposed to be doing (all he said last time was 1mi on each Wed, Fri, and Sun, but that was for last week) and he hasn't written back yet, so until he does I guess I'll just try not to do too much.

Say hi to Adam for me, Alyie

Alyie,

Adam did an internship in my lab at The Jackson Lab last year. He's a great guy. I really enjoyed working with him. Tell him I said hi!

will do

next time I see him, which hopefully will be soon.

Stop by

his office.

Don't do too much or I'll tell on you!!!

tattletailing

you won't have to, because I'm not going to do too much, because I don't want the freakin' thing to crack again. I've had enough of this not-running-for-six-weeks nonesense.

I sent him another email, but I'll stop in tomorrow if he doesn't write back.

found another one

For my Honors 180 class (culture thing, we have to go to 6 different performances and write reviews of them) we formed groups of 5, and when we were introducing ourselves, one of the girls said "wait a minute, Alyie, are you the Alyie who ran the MDI marathon?" Turns out she ran it too, her name is Emily.
Isn't it strange how things work out sometimes!!!

You're famous!

:-)

It's getting a little colder, but it's still incredibly warm for the middle of winter. I ran a bit on the lake. It was interesting because there were mirror smooth patches at some points and rough patches at others. The wind was sort of erratic, but it keeps you on your toes. One minute it will be with you, the next it's against you. I did the last mile+ barefoot on the indoor track.

why the

barefoot running?

Many reasons

Lets you run the way you were made to run and builds a lot of lower leg strength. Basically you will get faster. Last year I was running a few miles a week barefoot. Sometimes on pavement. Grass is preferred, but you land so much diffrent barefoot that you don't beat yourself up too bad.

You should try it for a while, not getting over a foot injury.

I read somewhere

that it also builds up the strength of your foot muscles (makes sense). This leads to a faster leg turnover, plus the stuff that Judson said.

10 mi. w/ economy repeats

2mi. w/u
(20)x 250m with 1st 50m slow acceleration and last 200m @ 33 sec./ followed by 150m walking recoveries;
(8)x 100m @ 16sec./ followed by 100m walking recoveries
2mi. c/d.

Turns out I like that pace.

"....Here kitty, kitty"

Does that mean

You are going to run in the track meet this weekend?

What you talking about?

...I thought that /was/ the track meet.

Oh

My mistake

spinning at the Y

another great class with Ashley (1 hour)....after a late 5 mi on the treadmill last night.

7miles. Surfs up! Way up!

And Honey the Wonder Dog is too. She can stand and walk on her own for the first time in 2 days. Yesterday we took her to the vet pretty certain that she wouldn't be coming home. But the 3 of us were such a pathetic pile on the floor of the exam room, I think they took pity on us and injected her with miracle drugs. Whatever the cure, we now have tail wagging in the house again. Lauren left India this morning and I will have her home on Friday afternoon so she can spend a couple of days with the puppy she picked out at the Bangor Humane Society 14 years ago. Lauren was in kindergarten then and Honey was small enough to be carried by Lauren inside her winter coat.

The winds are already pretty wild here. But it's warm enough to be fun. I ran in the woods for as much of it as I could. When I popped out on the road to head home, I could tell they were a lot stronger than when I had left home. Fortunately the wind was at my back for the last two miles of effortless air gliding. The water is churning up a thick sea foam that jiggles like jello until the peaks get blown off and the sand on the beach has been blown smooth.

Let's hear it for miracle drugs then.

That's very good news and the tail wagging is communicable.

Rae--glad your dog is up and around

hope she gets fully recovered--pets make life so much better.

best wishes,
ed

yay!

Glad to hear Honey's doing better.

Wag, wag, wag

13-miles

70-minute run, first 25-minutes easy(6:20-6:30 pace for the miles that were measured), last 45-minutes harder(5:19-5:24 pace for the miles that were measured). About 12-miles.

Did the Eagle, Jordan, Bubble loop and made my way out past Witch hole. Jogged back to Eagle lake for a good 1+ mile cooldown.

The rain held off the entire time. That big green blob took a break just as I headed out the door. A little windy out, but the carriage roads ae nice and soft, should be good and muddy later.

Run around Eagle Lake later anyone, 3:30 or 4pm, whenever.

6.5-miles

did the long modified 5M Milk Run loop. nice and windy. Nobody out there except for the motor vehicles. Strangely dark out there, which reminds me of my co-worker one cube over...

"A dark night in a city that knows how to keep its secrets. . . . But on the 12th Floor of the Acme Building, one man is still trying to find the answers to life's persistent questions: Guy Noir, Private Eye."

Wow...

I think I saw a student float away after trying to take a shortcut to Leavenworth Hall...

Anyhow...Today will be a double on the tread...5 miles this morn at 7minute mile effort, and another 5 at 6:30-6:45 tonight

Talk about gloom, all the snow is basically gone around the campus. It's been raining since last night.

Rae, best wishes and glad to hear Honey is doing well.

-Chris

Honey says

Thanks to all the 2 legged and 4 legged runners for their support. She doesn't have any miles to post but thoroughly enjoyed her car ride. The world just looks like a happier place when you are driving around with a muddy dog, eating a Slim Jim, on the seat next to you.

6miles A Powerful Surf

I ran in and out of the woods this morning trying to avoid huge gusts of wind and salt spray everywhere. The seas are screaming! Steven(my husband) is an avid surfer so guess where he is now! Brian informed me yesterday that I could enter my miles weekly. Thanks for the info.and the inspiration Brian and all of you. I love reading the posts.

Amy--where does your husband surf?

and what thickness wetsuit does he wear?

ed

Ed, Windsurfing and short bo

Ed,
Windsurfing and short boarding used to be quite popular off seawall beach. There's a nice break just off-shore, large rock beach though.
It's been 12 plus years for me so . . . plus the rangers may not look to keenly on this. They shut us down on Eagle-lake for windsurfing and well, just doesn't happen now.

dave

Good to see you

posting on the board Amy. Thanks for your miles!

Sounds like you had an adventurous run today.

Yay, Amy's here!

I am glad you will start posting your miles, AND your amazing workouts! Sounds like a wild run today...I'm impressed you were out there. Not me, I was a weather wimp today. Maybe I'll see you Friday??

Hi, Amy!

Nice to "see" you!!!

Hi Amy P.!

How are you? I've been hoping you would show up here. Amy R. passed on your mailboat "hello". It was so great to see her! Sub3ChrisG says you are speedy and that's a lot coming from her! I hope to see you soon and catch up on all your news.

55 mins. Pilates

I worked out indoors, but for the last several hours I've been looking out the window of my Harvard sabbatical office as I work, seeing incredible wind and rain off and on. The Weather.com site says it is in 54 degrees, windy with gusts up to 31 mph. But when I look up Watertown (where our house is and where Craig is working right now) it says 57 degrees and gusts up to 50 mph! That fits his description of it 30 mins. or so ago! He thought that some trees (in addition to tree branches) might come down. We also have a wind advisory, by the way.

it is windy and beautiful in Orono

The sky is a perfect gray color and the branches of the trees are whipping through the air. It's GORGEOUS. I love storm skies.

orono

Does it smell like mill today? (cabbage skunk and just general nasty stink-ness) It usually does before/during snow or rain. The mill stench is something I DO NOT miss about college.

I didn't notice if it did

I wasn't really near that area of campus today.
My new dorm room right now smells like a locker room on my roommate's side (soccer gear) and clorine on my side though.

6 miles

Well, actually, 5.97 miles on the treadmill. Then the power went off. It came right back on within a minute, but I didn't do the extra .03, and am taking credit for 6, to make it easier for Frank the Edenometer Guy.

6-miles 44:16

Eagle Lake. Stopped raining just as I headed out the door again and started as I was halfway back home in my car, what luck.

Anyways, for all you who think I am the culprit and push the pace everyday here's my proof I run easy. Eagle Lake in 43:36, with mile splits of 7:32,7:30,7:13,7:20,7:27,7:15.

So when you see a bunch of us runing 38 or 40 minutes, that's simply me staying up with whoever is pushing the pace.

Oh, I see...

is that how it works? Well thanks for clearing that up then.

One other thing

In my morning run I was running into one of those high gusts of wind about as hard as I could go when all of a sudden the wind stopped. For a couple of seconds I had a feeling of weightlessness. It was so cool. Never felt anything like it other than skydiving.

maybe you just

ran faster than the wind!

Is that like

breaking the sound barrier?

hmmmm.... not sure.

Maybe Bullet Time, like The Matrix?

treadmillin'

5 miles. Listening to the wind. (No, not really, listening to i-pod.) With flashlight handy just in case.

Glad Honey is well. Glad the fast Amy is posting again. Glad to read about surfing and ice climbing. Glad for runs into and out of the wind and rain. Much better day today than yesterday. I am just glad.

afternoon workout

I took an hour nap from 2-3 then had practice at 3:45. 2 mile warmup then a 20 minute tempo run in Washington Park. It felt good to run hard for an extended period rather than just 600 repeats or something like that. I felt very happy with my fitness at the end. 4x30 second strides and a sort of long cooldown brought the workout's total to 12 and the day's total to 18.

At this weekend's meet I get to do a 5k. 25 laps will be different, although I guess if I do the 10k outdoors it will still be 25 laps. My PR is actually from the first 5k of an 8k so I'm excited see what I can get for a time with just the 5k. 16:47's the time to beat.

Good Luck

Good Luck this weekend, that's actually just 2 seconds off of my PR...I recommend just not to be afraid to start pressing it down after about lap 10 (the numbers just keep clicking off it seems) But luckily, it seems you run with a good amount of quality guys in each of your races, so that should help.

You'll feel the 25 laps the next day though :)

Let there be light

Power was out in Bar Harbor for an hour or so. What did I miss?

9 total

Ran 4 in the morning and 5 this evening. My mileage for this week, will be the most since cross season 2 years ago. I'm feeling great too, but know that I'm not even close to my 90 mile weeks.

Power is still out on Norway.

Our power is still out (Norway Drive area).

I was at the Y last night finishing up my workout when the lights went out. I only had 5 minutes left on the bike but they wouldn't let me stay and spin in the dark....

For Wednesday I ended up with 83 minutes on the bike:
10 minute warmup
30 minutes time trial pace (not bad... 13 miles in 30:44 on the recumbent)
43 mintues cruising along for recovery

Frank H...did you notice that I posted my Tuesday workout under Monday's daily log by accident this week?

That slipped in under

my radar Carol but I will make an adjustment later today.

Hope the power returns soon.

Thanks Frank!

Based on the Bangor Hydro web site it looks like there is just a little square of Bar Harbor still without the juice. I'm thinking we might need to invest in a generator just to power the essentials (i.e., the coffee grinder and coffee pot).

apparently our dorm lost power

Didn't bother me, I was already asleep!

generator

We've been talking about getting one for our Maine cabin. But the essentials for us consist primarily of the water pump plus maybe a light or two. We can actually survive without light, computers, etc. for a day, but not without water, since without water the toilets don't flush!! In Boston, when our electricity goes out we still have water, but not in Maine. Craig was going to surprise me with a generator for Xmas, but it turns out he had to know the pump's power rating, which we don't know. So we have to wait until next time we are up there and check it out.

Wednesday Totals

Running/walking = 105
Swimming = 6300 yards
Spinning = 143 min
Elliptical = 55 min
Pliates = 55 min
