Happy Birthday, Buff Manilla!
Good luck to CGat at the Rhody 5K and to Austin, RK, and others at the Cobscook 10K.
where he'd probably just as soon forget about birthdays, but since the editor brought the subject up. Happy Birthday!
Good luck to all the runners at Cobscook and elsewhere, too. It looks like it might be great running weather downeast, but not so good for the postrace cookout - kinda damp - sprinkling, presently.
Nice racing last night in Mass by one of Eden's most dedicated, (J.C.!) too. Just thinking about driving down and back in one day, let alone running a race tires me out.
rain!
Really, it is! Perfect weather for a Sunday run with Mark and Kev around the Bubble, Jordan, Eagle 11-mile loop. Temperature was pleasant, the few gusts above Jordan Pond were energizing, and the shoes didn't get all that soggy. Great run to do with company.
Thanks, gentlemen!
Go Cobscook runners! They must be passing the 5K mark and starting to climb that 4 mile hill by the cemetary. Bet those hills over the last 1.2 miles will be a little muddy and slick today. Fun!
But only because my hip hurts, not for any other reason. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
;-)
10 miles.
Long run tommorrow. Totally beautiful out. If you get the chance to run, go outside. Waterfalls, everything is so peaceful. Wish I could have gotten my long run in today because I felt so good.
grey skies and rain leaving at 6:30 from Bangor to Pembroke this morning. We knew it was going to be wet... but how wet was it going to be.
We arrived in Pembroke about 9:15 - everybody was sitting in their cars waiting for a quick warm up or soaked. I figured it's not if I was going to get soaked... it was when. Off I ran for the 2 mile warm up, mostly to see what the conditions were going to be like and how the roads were.
Ready for the race - went off at 10:00 on schedule. Steady pace we went. I passed the first mile (in stride for stride step) with Austin in 5:42. Up ahead of us was Jim Newett, Tommy McWalters and the race favorite, Jeremey Lisee.
I let Austin go about 2 miles - I'm thinking to myself that I might be a bit over my head, so I backed off, but kept it steady. So, through the wind and rain the next miles slowly went by.
Through the 5K at 19:21 - At this point I was thankful for the hat I was wearing, the gloves I had on and the slick new shirt that I wore last winter at Hyannis - being warm is a good thing.
Finished the hills portion in fine fashion. Kept my nose to the ground and ran strong. Up and over - It wasn't as muddy as I thought it was going to be. Another good thing.
Awards ceremony and lunch was at the IOOF Hall - and keeping with the ritual - here are partial results...
1 - Jeremy Lisee 36:41 3 - Austin Townsent 38:41 4 - Jim Newett 39:04 5 - Ryan King 39:56 7 - Peter Lodge 41:13 8 - Ty Daniel-Davis 42:16 10 - Kevin Dow 43:07 11 - Chris Almy 43:24 14 - Lara Rand 44:54
Props for crazy PRs for this race should go to Austin 38:41 and Ty Daniel-Davis 42:16. It was Ty's first 10K and I think he likes the hills.

A very interesting race. Didn't finish on the dog-track due to the rain.
Not a very fun course, a million turns, windy, and deceptive climbs. but hey, finally got under 17 this year early even if it wasnt pretty.
1st mile- 5:17 2nd mile- 5:26 3rd mile- 5:40 :35
Finishing in the 60's though is a humbling experience only being 14 seconds or so off my 5k PR but honestly to do that this early in the summer and on an admittedly uneven effort/ugly day I'll definitely take it :)
Good showing for PR as a team. To put it in perspective, I was our 7th runner I believe. Enjoyed the race, and especially the bbq after. Best Post-race food i've ever had.
7 miles total for the day
good job to all racers this last weekend, Chris
So did they just finish it on the runway near the casino? I didn't like that race last year. It was 90+ degrees and there is no shade on that course. I got a whoopin last year and ran 16:0?. Wonder where all the Dirigo guys were.
Ya, something like that.
A lot of people didn't enjoy the extreme weather difference. Last year was 94, this year was 54....so i could understand that.
Not sure about the Dirigo runners, however, they generally don't travel out of state to compete as much as most other clubs will it seems. Not saying thats good or bad but just an observation.
Chris
Tough conditions out there. The race started in a stinging rain with wind gusts and sheets of water. My strategy of acclimating to the heat by running in the 88 degree streets of Pensacola Florida early this week didn't pan out. The downpour persisted throughout the race but was heaviest in the first 5 K, at which point, we started climbing hills. Well anyway, let's just say I didn't set a new PR today. But the dedicated hospice volunteers and the feed afterwards (grilled salmon steaks!) was really outstanding.
Well, I can't echo Brian's enthusiasm about the conditions, but it wasn't as bad as I'd expected. Let me qualify that: it would have been awful had I been on my own, but having Brian and Kevin there to laugh when we came almost to a standstill as an absolute blast of wind hit us on the west side of Jordan Pond made it OK. Very very wet, but OK. 11 total at a nice steady pace on legs that have been feeling steadily better the past three days.
Feeling rather like a snapping turtle today.
6oo swim, 4oo pull, 2oo kick 2 x [8 x 25] first set build, second set down easy back fast 4 x 5oo on 8:00 (hee hee, lazy interval) 6:25, 6:23, 6:23, 6:19 2oo easy 2oo kick 2 x [8 x 25] first set whip kick, second set breaststroke bunch of dolphin dives 6 x 1oo IM on 1:50 8 x 75 pull on 1:10 (more laziness, those should be on 1:05 or so) 4oo easy
Sitting in my lone truck at Bubble Parking lot with the rain coming down minutes before 8am, I thought it would be just me, so that short easy run would be all I did. Minutes later Brian and then Mark showed up. We quickly agreed on the 11 mile loop. Lucky me, tagging along with those two gave me a long marathon pace run.
I decided to run the Camden 10K, then decided against it, then figured I should just get in the car and start driving. The rain didn't let up a bit, but I like rain runs. The starting line, finish line, and all mile markers were washed away in the rain, so it was a surprising treat to cross the line in 44:32. New best time for me, but that's not terribly surprising considering this was the first time I'd ever run a 10K without pushing a jogger. I'll take the PR any way I can get it. : )

Congrats on the PR!
or is it her twin?!
congrats cgat and 10K runners on great races. Dave T.
but it hasn't yet. 12 miles in the sun with a temperature of 72 and a nice breeze to keep me from overheating. I did my typical sunny weather route through the local parks and golf courses and the lakefront.
Also, nice jobs in all the races this weekend, and happy birthday Buff Manilla!
Eagle lake, Jordan Pond, Bubble Pond loop..... the waterfalls were numerous and spectacular after all that rain. Nice misty conditions for a very nice relaxed 9mm paced run.
With my friend Pam who cajoled me into running. Barely enough miles worthy of a post but it really was a pretty good run. I didn't even notice the rain after a bit. Unfortunately no waterfalls. Only puddles.
My hat's off, especially, to Ty and Austin for a phenomenal efforts...and to everyone else who survived today's monsoon at Cobscook. Why is it that no one commented on the absence of black flies?
We shook the missing times out of the waterlogged Chronomix timer--they should be posted by Eden and/or Sub-5 shortly.
Thanks for supporting Down East Hospice!
Got them.
Thanks, Jonathan!
in the mist, sometimes actual rain. And you know that down hill part? I ran that part real fast. Like a real runner. Long strides, both feet off the ground at the same time, it was pretty cool.
BEST WISHES!
thanks for the kind birthday wishes and congrats to all who ran so well today
at an age, at an age ... er what's that you say, Bruce? is somebody there? ... zzzzz
Managed to squeeze in a fast, one-way, four mile run from Jordan Pond House to Bubble Parking lot, counterclockwise. Felt like 5:30 effort Sooo beautiful out, with the waterfalls and the mist - glad to be back on the carraige roads.
Running/walking = 127 Swimming = 6000 yards
Good racing JC (Saturday night), RK, Austin, Tim G., CGat, Shannon and Ty!
