FIRSTS: Known & Unknown bits & pieces...FIRST: Maine schoolboy runner under 4:30 mile: David Farley, Brewer High (late 50's)..1st Bangor 5-mile winner (Memorial Day, 1962), Mike Kimball (UMO)..1st Patriots Day 5-mile winner (1930), Alvin Messer, Portland)..1st (class L or A)schoolboy 2-mile run held in Maine (1962)Jerry Varnum, Gardiner: 10:13+....1st 4 time (class B) schoolboy x-country champ: Scott Roberts, Maranacook High (Mid- 1980's)...A RECORD not to be broken::: In the early 1960's, Sam Burgess, Morse High of Bath, set a fantastic record @ Bowdoin College on a 2 1/2 mile course; In the mid 70's Billy Wilson from Bath & attending Bowdoin College (9:15-9:18 2-miler) attempted (weather a race or time trial)missed it by less than a second...after that no attempt made..A building was built on the course & going over the roof line would negate any record setting......B |
