6 miles for the Edenometer. Mighty warm already. Good luck all at the Tremont race! I hope it feels cooler at the ocean.
Dwayne and I biked Aunt B, around the mountain and Eagle Lake early this morning. We played cat and mouse the entire way. He would pass me on the downhill and I would catch him on the uphill.
I am planning on running 10.9 tomorrow at 8:00 from Bubble Pond. I would like company if there are any slower paced (10 min. per mile or so) runners out there looking to do that distance.
For the week: Sunday: 8 running Monday: 18.5 biking Tuesday: 5.9 running Wednesday: 2 miles on elliptical Thursday: 8.1 running Friday: 2.2 walking
Good luck to all the racers today!
1. Matt H., 21:27 2. Andy G., 21:46 3. Forrest, 22:26 4. Cassie, 22:32 5. JC, 24:01 6. TfT, 24:19 7. Chris G., 25:03 10. Kate McG., 27:34 16. Tom K., 30:57 20. Ginger, 32:48 23. Lou, 33:36 26. Robin, 36:46 Nice job!
I'm sorry I wasn't there to watch it, but Craig was down in Boston and I was trying to decide whether or not to drive to Portland this afternoon to meet him (I finally decided not to), so I forgot about the race and just walked 3.3 miles around Witch Hole Pond, instead.
We got out the door at 6:15 and the temps felt perfect, roads were cool, plenty of shade, less flies and even a nice breeze. By the time we finished it had defintely heated up and the shade was getting harder to find. I'm a morning convert.
Return from the Bunyan Expo - Looks like a Marathon Expo - runners are showing up from all over - there appears to be some national weather concerns (thunderstorms) so a few runners I heard have had problems arriving to Bangor. Anyway, I hassled the marathon director about being a bandit tommorow :)
Also there you can see some old bunyan marathon gear there from some of the old races - including awards, photos and even an old bib number.
S and I will be there at Mile 14 tommorrow morning. Good luck to all competing and be careful.
I ran 8:12's not 8:05's. I'm still happy with that. Gotta go, lunchtime for my little runner. Nice to see you all today. Congrats again Matt on your win!
Warm day for a race. Judson ran with me for the first couple miles, and while we had discussed a pace slightly faster, he sized up the situation, in which I was working pretty hard, and we hit the first mile about 15 seconds slow. Not to worry, he said, it is good not to go out too fast. The next mile was rough, but he tried to make me feel better about my split by telling me the mark was off. Frank joined us at about the one mile mark, setting a cadence for me with his squeaky bike. Just past the halfway point, Judson, having shown admirable restraint to that point, couldn't resist sprinting ahead and trying to catch the leaders, and in retrospect, I was glad he wasn't there with me at the end, as it was not pretty. Mile 3 was more or less a blur, and I cursed the hills along the way, sounding very much like a rusty old steam engine. It was reassuring to have Frank alongside, and I think if he were not there, I may very well have stopped. When I rounded the corner onto the Flat Iron Road, I could not have been more relieved, and relaxed a bit on the slight downhill. As I turned into the school parking lot, the strangest sensation came over me, and the ground starting falling away from under my legs, which had basically stopped working. People were shouting at me "don't stop! don't stop!", and I found my bearings and ran for a few moments until it happened again. I somehow made it to the finish line, and have never been so happy to sit down. So who knows what the heck that was all about. I was very well hydrated, and can only speculate that it was the heat. Anyway, all that nonsense cost me the 3 seconds that would have put me under 25 minutes, so I have to make sure that doesn't happen again.
Great to see so many Eden singlets out there again today. Nice running, everyone, especially Matt, who was "just here for a workout".
I ran the first 3.25 miles with Chris G. Our splits the first 3 miles were, 6:17, 6:37, 6:13. Then I let Frank's capable hands take her the rest of the way while I did one stride to catch Tim. Last mile was 5:01 although I'm not sure how accurate that is because I ran the first and last 1/4 miles pretty easy and just ran hard in the middle to catch Tim If I ran that fast then I'm in better shape than I thought and am all set for B2B because that was easy.
Duck Brook - Aunt Betty's - Eagle loop. My legs were a bit tired from yesterdays biking, so I generally went slow. Occasionally I tried to concentrate on form, working on my lazy lower right leg. I played Cat and Mouse on the east side of Eagle with a couple on bikes. I passed them on that little hill and then slowed to allow them to pass me. They got about 50 yards ahead before I was able to start closing the distance. I finally made my catch just before the boat landing.
i edited my earlier report with an expo update - here is my earlier post again from today about the Canoe Hullabaloo 10K in Old Town.
The course a bit warm and exposed this morning. A few runners running the 9 miler and bangor marathon tommorrow showed up. Finished in 2nd place overall in 42:50. Took it slow until Mile 5 due to nobody to run with and the heat. Overall winner finished in 37 and some change.
1 6:21 2 6:49 3 7:00 4 7:15 5 7:07 6 6:50 10K 1.25
5K sounded like it had a volunteer pointing in the wrong direction. Eric Rudolph went from the lead to the back of the pack back to the lead and was the overall winner by 3 minutes. The Governor was there as well - he finished 2nd in his age group.
very difficult run for me. I too felt like I might stop to walk for a bit, but Brian and Judson kept me moving. splits were: 6:06, 6:20, 6:09, 5:43. The last mile, though it was the fastest, felt like a 10 minute mile.
2 hour paddle out of Manset afterward. Nice and cool out on the water.

Thanks, Ed!
Great to see all the Eden Athletics singlets out there in Tremont.
My plan was to go out at 5:30 pace for the first mile and then go 10 seconds faster per mile (5:30, 5:20, 5:10, 5:00). I didn't quite manage that, but at least the trend was right: 5:44, 5:36, 5:10, 5:07.
The highlight of the race for me was coming around the corner to the finish. Sara cheered and Fenway started barking for me. He seemed so excited.
Finished it all off with a swim in Echo Lake.
Tip of the hat to my coach for designing some good workouts to prepare me for the race.
Next up: Fort Knox.
Warm out there today. Jogged out a way on the Tremont course and then ran the last mile back, quite a bit quicker, with Tim. Short cool down afterward with Chris.
Then we repaired to Echo Lake to watch Nora give Alyie sailing lessons. Fortunately Camp Beech Cliff's dinghys are pretty stable and forgiving -- not very far from luff to leach, nor jib to jibe.
Water was nice, but it's a pretty big hill to climb back up once you're all cooled down and freshened by a swim.
Fast like yesterday. Although I ran at the same time as usual, the sun seemed a lot lower. I'm still working on finding non-imported peanut butter at the local Tesco. It's a pretty big place. I found it in the international foods section, but I want to find Czech produced PB if they have it. I'm still a little stymied by the Czech milk. It comes in liter boxes (that's right, boxes) and has a very very distant expiration date, yet it is still liquid and tastes normal.
Nice job at the races today everyone.
Isn't there a Muybridge of a man running too?
Here it is: Man running
(...along with a modest warning that Muybridge photographed his human subjects with no more clothes than the horse.)
if it weren't for the warning.

see y'all tomorrow morning :D
Please bring any you would like to contribute to our bottle drive to Bubble Pond tomorrow.
Short bike ride on Tremont Trot course alternating between Chris G and Judson and Tim T who was running pretty much alone. Good racing everyone. Paddle tonight.
I've obviously missed this. Where would I find out where, when, etc.?
Thanks for your interest Joanne. We are conducting a bottle and can drive for EA this summer and will be collecting redeemables at Sunday long runs and Wednesday workouts at the track. We will take the first load to the redemption center in mid August.
We will bring our redeemables to one of the two locations before we leave in early August!
Go get 'em team! I think the buzzwords of the day downeast were, "geez, bub, ain't it hawt out. Too bad we couldn't bottle some of this and cut 'er loose in January." We hear that mantra down here every year when it hits 70 for the first time. I even saw a blackfly today, so the ice really must be out of the lakes. No doubt, we'll probably have a frost tonight though, so, as of right now, I'm gonna go cover up the tomatoes.
With Matt H. and Mike B.
Soak in the brook after although the water was pretty warm.
Went for a hike before the run. Started at Sand Beach and went up to the bowl where I headed north where there was an abandoned trail on my old map. Into the woods on a trail of sorts it opened up and all of a sudden I found a set of 10 steps that were in perfect working order. I got a picture and will get it up sometime. Followed the trail down and down. Right in between Champlain Mnt. and Enoch Mnt. was another set up steps leading up. Followed those and soon I was in the valley and from there went east up to the top of Enoch Mnt. Lots of untouched blueberries. Sat up there for awhile and read and ate blueberries while I watched the crazyness over on the Beehive. Followed some more trails after that which were awesome and finally decided to bushwhack back to the bowl where I ended up running into a couple other old trails. Fun.
Thanks to DCYoung, we've got some preliminary results and photos from the Potato Blossom 5-miler in Fort Fairfield.
Looks like Evan won it in 26:53. Jeff Ashby was fourth in 29:30 and Newell was 5th on 29:45.
You can see photos at DCYoung's blog
Running/walking = 149 Biking = 18.5 Swimming = 3100 yards Good racing at Tremont and Potato Blossom. Congrats Matt!
