Good luck today to Adam and CGat!
with the group. Big turnout! the rolling returnable bucket was a great success! Thanks Bonnie for the blueberry muffins. People love to run for food. Thanks Kevin for that little push at the end, it felt great.
...over, and 1500' up. From Seal Harbor beach to the top of Cadillac via Stanley Brook and the loop, with (5)x 1min. surges and 1min. recovery jogs starting at Bubble Pond and finishing at the bottom of the mountain road.
After that, the last 3 miles up Cadillac were hard for me -- felt dehydrated, more than hot and tired -- and if Coach hadn't been with me I might have walked at some point. Of course, if Coach hadn't been with me, I also probably wouldn't have run the 1-min intervals so hard, trying to impress him with my can-do attitude, so maybe I wouldn't have felt like walking so much afterwards. So it all evens out.
Anyway, I got a good workout and didn't walk -- about 75 minutes from beach to summit and, starting in the fog from Seal Harbor right up through Jordan Pond, it was definitely a fun way to do the climb. Soak back at the beach afterward.
Thanks, Coach.
It was great to see everyone at Bubble Lake (and great to get rid of all those returnable bottles, Frank--thanks!). I walked up the side of Bubble Lake for about 35 mins., then turned around and came back. Let's call it 3 miles for the Edenometer (it was probably more than 3 but certainly less than 4). Then I went to the farmer's market in Bar Harbor. The first local blueberries were in! I also got local strawberries and raspberries, fresh shell peas, free range chicken, goat cheese, tapenade... My mouth is watering as I write!
The mist is finally clearing from Eastern Bay, and I can hear the pair of loons I was watching down there this morning. A batch of kayaks just came by on their way from Hadley Point.
Edenistas, that is. 13, if we can count Rick H., whom we never actually saw, but his car was there. Most of us started off together, from Bubble Pond parking toward Jordan Pond House and beyond. Alyie said she was feeling more like a bicyclist than a runner this morning, and opted to ride the Loop Road. Matt, Tim, Frank and I did the figure 8, for 14.5 miles, and spotted (and were spotted by) the Hubbellmobile, presumably coming down from Cadillac, just as we crossed the road near the Jordan Pond Gatehouse. Brian at least had enough energy to honk. It was warm, but seemed much less humid today. The thought of Bonnie's famous blueberry muffins at the finish prompted us to quicken the pace a bit up the Eagle Lake hill on the final stretch. Thanks, Bonnie, for those, and thanks, Frank, for the water!
I'm sorry I missed everyone at Bubble Pond. It would have been much more fun with you. I left at 7:30 on the 17-16-15-14-10-7 loop fearing it would be just too hot to start after 8. Turned out it wasn't too bad at all. Running at a 9.5 minute pace I was *sure* the rest of you would eventually catch up.
I saw several discarded water bottles along the way and was already carrying my own. I would have loved that rolling returnable bucket.
In 1:14 around steamy Ipswich and through Willowdale. A swim and stretches, too. I'll be looking to run on Tuesday morning on the island. Don't have to be in Bangor 'till 1pm.
Keep running!
Nice Sunday social gathering. It was very nice out with the sun splashed carriage roads. Karen's lilting voice made the middle miles pleasent and it was John that pushed the pace coming back from Eagle, leaving me in his wake.
The thought of those muffins were the only thing that pulled me through the last few miles today. I felt yesterday's race in my legs, and it was a bit warm for my taste, but I chalked up a nice 14+ with ChrisG and TimT anyway.
Thanks to Bonnie for the muffins and Frank for the invaluable water service en route.
early at 5:30 we drove by the starting line to see hundreds of runners getting ready for the gun near the Bunyan Statue. In honor of the aforementioned statue, we drove via the marathon route to see who was setting up and get excited for the day.
Along the way, we saw groups of walkers - the first at Mile 3, then more at Mile 5, and even some at Mile 10. I asked if they were all set - they said they had started at 3 AM!
S and I set the water stop up at Mile 14. We had the usual water, a box of GU (we quickly ran out of) and Ultima - Watermelon flavored - it would take me awhile to get use to that. Right before the first runners started coming, there was a crazy rainstorm - at least it was overcast for the beginning - not as sunny and exposed as Saturday.
about 9:40 or so the first runner came through (Chuck Engel) - he was very pleasant and nice - actually stopped and talked for a second - thanked us for volunteering and continued on his run. At the time he was way out in the lead - a few minutes later, other runners came through.
For the next hour or so - everyone ran or walked by - some faces familiar, some soon to be (we later went to Mile 22 to help there as well).
Great stories from all - there were lots of hills and the warmth must have kept things from runners going to fast - 3 were sub 3 hours - Austin Townsend finished 4th at 3:00 flat.
15K finished quickly - Andy Beardsley finished 1st, Adam Goode finished 2nd and Cassie Hintz finished 3rd.
Hope that gives you an idea what happened in Bangor today.
Boy it was a wild day.
Helped at Mile 2 with a great crew from Sub 5 and then moved to Mile 4 to help Amy F and her kids. They looked real good there. Then got a call that mile 6 needed help. Amy and I went ahead there. I then checked out 16. Chatted with Cassie and her Dad at Mile 16 and then spent the rest of the day at Mile 22.
Finally got introduced to RK and S. Saw Peter K at mile 24.
I saw a guy in Bar Harbor wearing a race shirt, and asked him about it. He said he had a good race - he's from LA and is trying to run a marathon in all 50 states.
this guy? http://www.50in50in50.com/
And nice racing eveyone today as well.
but I wasn't really paying too much attention - I was talking and trying to defend my sandcastle from the oncoming waves.
The CBS affiliate (WABI-TV) had a great report on the Bunyan Marathon tonight. They said that Adam Goode was the 15K Men's Champion and Cassie Hintz was the Women's Champion. I'm sure when the results get posted that will clear everything up. Sorry about the errant post - I was out on the marathon route all day long!
a different overall winner - once again Andy Beardsley! Congratulations!! What happened? Bangor Daily News is a great source... they'll take it from here.
Andy didn't do the loop around the park by the Abraham Lincoln school in the last mile, he probably missed .2 miles there. Then he missed the turn into Garland Street Middle School. I didn't even get to talk to him. I crossed the line first, and I don't think Andy ever actually finished, but before he missed the park in the last mile he was probably 20 seconds ahead.
that explains it... that's too bad about getting off the course - it was pretty tricky especially at the end. Thanks again for helping all the marathon runners get back to the starting line.
and with that long run ends this phase of summer training. For the next six weeks I'm on a 14 day cycle with threshold workouts, 200/400 rep workouts, and fartleks every few days in addition to the weekly long run and easy runs.

I would have listened to JC regarding the plan for the day. Didn't see it til a moment ago.
Actually ran somewhat smart but still managed to bonk.
Contributing factors- Heat, Humidity, perhaps calling it a day far too early, and something not very right at all with my stomach.
Stayed about a 10 minute jog from the race start, so threw on the flats/bib/chip and jogged it over. Tried to stay cool under the tent but the wait in line for the port-o-johns defeated that purpose. Once we lined up, I could just see the sweat beading out from everywhere and knew it would be interesting.
First mile in 5:48, second in 5:52, third at 5:53(uphill), and 4th at 5:39 (downhill)...had stuck to the plan seemingly and was right where i wanted to be (23:16ish at the 4mile) and had reeled runners like levan and other guys who went out too quick in already.
But after mile 5 it was over. Ran 6:11...the sun was starting to take its toll, there was maybe a combined 100m of shade on the course and I honestly just didn't have the gusto to go after it and get back on track. After 5, it was just a tempo run where I was running anywhere from 6:20-6:50 and just trying to stay on my feet/(not lose everything downward), even walked for a good 30-40 seconds going into the last mile. It took everything i had to hold off a struggling E.Levan with 50 to go.
I'll take the fact that i ran a strong 4 miles, but honestly, it was a long car drive home after being pretty disappointed.
Anyhow, 11 miles on the day
great job to all racers this weekend, Chris
guess I should have run instead. Well, I did run, but not until after I had biked.
BRICK! 3 hr bike + 5 mi run :D
I was late for the run, so Tom K. and I booked it to catch Sara and Karen. I soon became a wet rag and did some walking with a grand total of 8.6 miles. I think yesterday's race combined with today's fast mile playing catch up did me in. I was sweating so badly my shorts were bubbling, no joke! As always nice to see everyone. Man, those muffins were good, thanks Bonnie!
Run up Caddy from Seal Harbor with Brian. Nice and foggy untilwe got to bubble pond, then hot and sunny.
A few hours of paintball in the woods out in Lemoine with local firefighters. Some new bruises to prove it.
Nora and I met Brian and JC on top of Cadillac with the truck at 8:15. They drove off for a soak and I biked off with Michael for a rapid descent and tour of the park. It went from warm on top to soggy at Otter Cliffs, and back to warm again. Nice ride. My lower quads have felt tight from running this week but after today they feel pretty good.
I began the run at Eagle Lake and met up with the group at Bubble Pond. I started with Sara, finished with John and Kevin, and connected with Ginger and Tom along the way.
I missed the muffins:(
great to see folks at the start and a few at the end today. I'm sorry I daudled and missed the muffins. Ran 3 miles before 8, then watched Ginger speed off. I ran the Bubble Jordan loop slowly. 10 miles total. Got home just as Carol was finishing a long bike ride. She and I then did the park loop road together. Beautiful day. The fog rolled in cold at the pier where I stopped for a soak after running. I'm glad I wasn't out there kayaking.
Spent the weekend down on Beals Island. No run, but about a 7 mile hike thru the nature conservancy land which makes up over 1500 acres of the island. The highlight was finding three different sets of whale bones.
and cans everyone and for Bonnie's Blueberry muffins. Wonderful.
Biked the figure eight with the running group and paddled a skinny loop last night.
With Matt, Chris and Frank starting off with the Bubble Pond group. Very tired and stiff legs...would not have run that far were it not for the company. And the muffins were a VERY pleasant suprise. Thanks Bonnie (and John).
Followed up the run with a nice CTW breakfast and a tour of the Porcupines (staying out of the fog) with Amy. Early dinner at Eden to round out a spectacular day.
I joined the early morning crew for 8.6 miles around JP and BP. Enjoyed a great muffin at the end.
Matt and I hit the carriage roads in the afternoon for a popover run. We started in town and head to JPH via Aunt Betty, 7 Bridges. Back via BP and EL. Fun times. I love summer!
Running/walking = 165 Biking = 40 miles and three hours Good job at Stowe cgat and to the Bunyan participants.
