Saturday, August 29: Daily Log

The Fjord Horse is one of the world's oldest and purest breeds of horse. It bears a striking resemblance to the horses painted on cave walls by ice age artists some 30,000 years ago and is believed to have migrated to Norway over 4,000 years ago. They were believed to have been first domesticated around 2000 B. C. Archaeological excavations at Viking burial sites indicate that the Fjord horse has been selectively bred for at least 2,000 years.

Missed a few...

I know Mary, Robin, Donald, Sara, Anna, Jeff, Austin, and Ty were there too. Nice showing all!

Blazing E's!

Great photo and great runs. There must be some PRs in there. Congratulations to all of you.

Of all the mornings for the antenna to fall off the

roof. Jeez, I was all charged up to watch the race on ESPN when I heard this "ka-clunk!" overhead and just as Chris Berman was getting ready to hand it over to the play by play guy in NEH, he turned to snow. I didn't despair for long though. I knew the reports and photos on EA's website would be just as good. Nice going gang! Especially to the geriatric portion of the crowd... Ozzie, Brian, Christine... you know who you all are.

First race in a while for me.

I finished with 8:30s which was comfortable... Now I would like to run it again and try pushing more. During the race I didn't have a good sense of how much I had left in me. I finished feeling like I'd run but not raced. More tempo runs should help that. Anyway, it was great to see all the EA singlets out there. What a gorgeous day and course!

two cooldowns totaling about 2-1/2 miles.

Quicker than I'd expected. but not quick enough to hang with Austin and Tim. Went out with a good group including those two for the first mile. Somewhere during the second mile I went to the front and had thoughts of putting on enough of a gap to keep the lead. However, by the third mile, both Austin and Tim had gapped me instead. I tried to run the fourth mile hard -- just as a matter of discipline -- and I think I did. Really felt like I died afterward on the last mile. But, the splits turned out to be fairly consistent. Interesting how the mental and phsyical states compare in a race.

Good job everyone! I'm particularly proud of Lids and Anna T. You should have seen how well Lid hung on to her goal pace at the end and how Anna, recovered from distress and found a big surge to kick past at the end. Mary looked really strong finishing too, as did Lou, Karen, and Ginger.

Also great to see Shannon and family out on the course. Shannon, I hope your foot problems are soon healed.

Northeast 5

Great to see so many red shirts. Good running everyone. I enjoyed the run but never really felt in sync. Lou, Ginger, Karen, and Lid were in view for a while just could not get the legs to work.
Weather was super, I missed getting in the E Team Photo.

8:30's going out and just under 7:00's coming in. A good race for me staying aerobic for all but the Main St. kick.

It was nice seeing my track buddy at the start and mile 4. Thanks for the cheers. Good races everyone.

Somes Sound on a day much like today.

NEH 5

I caught the ambulance to the start, after the last bus filled up. No sirens or lights, just 15 runners packed in the back, passing around the oxygen mask...
I can't claim anything but erratic spilts. The first 2 miles at 5:55, the last 3 at 6:24. Where's Coach Boyd? Still, I can't be too disappointed with an improvement of 1:47 in a year.
Great weather, great turnout. Have a great rest of the weekend!

Hi again, Judy :)

Good run, good fun

First of all, congratulations to everyone who ran so well today! The Eden family portrait says it all.

I am very happy with my race, went in with the hope of averaging 6:15s, and hit that dead on. Becky (aka Mountaintop Bride), Anna and I ran together for the first 3 or so, then Becky pulled ahead a bit, with Anna matching her stride for stride. I played it cool and hung back a bit to contemplate my options, which consisted of A) stopping, or B) trying to keep going. I chose B, which worked just fine for a while, and I managed to stay within a few meters of them. At about mile 4, Anna fell off Becky's pace a little, and I was able to edge past. Unfortunately, that was right when the Stitch got me, and I found myself even more seriously considering option A again. My last mile was an eternity, and Becky's kick was impressive. 1:17 min PR for me, so that's cool. Plus, I won a t-shirt in the raffle!

Mark Coogan won the 10k in 31:36, and Mayall doubled back to take 3rd in about 34:19.

Crazzzy.

Racing the L/A bridge run tommorow. First time i ever broke 18 back in the day. (only time i broke 18 my senior year actually). Training/mileage day essentially, but have a time in mind for the 5k too.

good luck cgat

at 5k and good luck at school as well.Must be near time to head back to VT.

exeter hospital

Jeff and I were even out late in boston the night before.

In case anyone is wondering, this is a very cool race. We tried to figure out which is more competative, the 5k or 10k based on past results and they both looked even in terms of the talent pool. The 5k course was quite flat and Exeter was a cool little town.

I'll probably see some of you at the Labor Day race and good job in the NE race.

yeah,as cgat mentioned

this guy Mayall is a sick dog.Check it out.An approaching geezer too at 35.Overall 1st in 5K-15:43 dusts off his shoes and grabs overall 3rd in the 10K-34:19.Not too shabby.

Nice work to everyone at the races. Wish I could have been around.

I did another fairly long workout to end my week at 115 miles, although I may run again later and break the 120 barrier. Warmed up and then did 8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 minute intervals with half the time of the interval after each. Started at just under 5:20 pace for the 8 minute interval and got progressively faster down to 1 minute. Hung onto Joe for the 8,7,6 around Bass Lake, but as soon as we started going uphill for the 5,4,3,2,1 I had to let him go and run my own effort. I still was able to get faster each interval, just not as fast as a 28 minute 10-k guy can run.

A good 15 miles total. First workout I've done faster than 5:12 pace since the 3-k on the 4th of July. Legs feel good although they have that feeling they are a little stretched out from running faster than normal. Still haven't been allowed to use anything but my trainers yet, so I'm psyched I have been able to do all these workouts in heavy shoes.

A down week for me next week and then the 20-k in New Haven with racing flats.

3

3 more just to loosen up the legs and show I can control myself. 118 for the week.

JC,nice miles

115!Wow,tough to contemplate.Would have to quit my job.Good luck at Zap.Hemphill is breathing a sigh of relief that you are in NC...

NEH 5 miler

Great job to all runners today!

I had Eden singlets in view from start to finish:)

NEH: RESULTS

Great Job, Folks

Great running at the NEH 5-miler. Looks like we had our usual amazing turnout. That's quite some picture with all the singlets.

Wish I could have been there today. Instead, I put in 9 or 10 miles down here in Phippsburg. Can't wait to get back on-island next week.

Timberman PHOTOS

Feel like a whiner

about the whole back thing, cuz i felt fine today. Had a good run just trying to keep Auzzie in striking distance (2:19 pr over last year). Thought I could catch him in the last 1/4 mile but, alas, his 20+ years of "experience" over me was too much to overcome. He's a machine.

Great to see everyone and this was just what I needed to get back into a positive running groove. Thanks to Bob and Becky for the shirt!

Speaking of Bob and Becky...

20060702_Wedding

Bob just sent in this photo from their Cadillac wedding on the Run MDI Weekend.

Thanks, Bob!

Great races everyone

I've enjoyed reading about all the impressive runs this morning. I confess I'm a little jealous even though I'm not really in shape for a hard 5 miler. But it was a looooong day yesterday--all went OK, but there was a delay that kept me on pins and needles for an extra 90 minutes--and I was still a little tired today and busy before another back-and-forth to Bangor. So I was happy just to get a stress-free 5 at a jog pace to clear out the pipes and head a bit.

8.5 miles

core,9 miles bike.Congrats all in 5 miler. Some truly impressive times and pr's.Weather about as perfect for racing as can be and I can imagine you all lined up this morning with that in mind.Feels like mid-Sept,dry mid-60's.Congrats again!

great running all

and super photo too. I skipped the race since my hams are still tight. I ran long instead on a beautiful Saturday and did a very slow 14. After a bunch of miles, everything felt fine. Fun to see Alyie out as I was running the Eagle Lake/Bubble/Jordan/AuntBetty figure 8. Left my car at Bubble Pond...great thing to do because with water drop at Eagle parking lot and water at Jordan POnd, the car also provided a quick stop point.

5 miles ...

with Patrick leading on his bike. Great job racers!

Congrats in the 5 miler

I felt much better today, but not fully healthy. Security on the planes seemed surprisingly lax given recent events, so that didn't take as long as I would have thought. I arrived safely and without delays. The same cannot be said, however, for my luggage. Supposedly it is due to arrive at Midway Airport at 3:40 PM today, and then be delivered to my dormitory. For now I have a couple books, what I was wearing, and a running kit which I had in my carry-on; you can't leave the important things to chance ;) So anyway, after filing my complaint at the ariport I took the bus to the campus, checked in, didn't see anybody around, and went for an easy 12 miles. When I got back people were around, apparently I just missed them getting back from a long run.

On my last day in Prague at the bookstore, I found a book in Czech whose title translates to "Heroes of the Marathon" I read a bit of it on the plane, and it seems like an amazing find so far. It is meticulously researched and clearly written (i.e. I can understand the grammar). It's 200+ pages of race reports of significant marathons and stories/biographies about the people who ran in them. Andrew Sockalexis even gets a mention. Seriously, I think a publisher translating the book into English could make them a lot of money from the running community.

6 plus

Super running all the way around for the EA crowd in the NEH Five Miler. It was great to see, and be in, the tide of red singlets working up the Sound. I enjoyed the race and particularly enjoyed pacing with Kevin from mile 3 to 4.5. Thanks for coming out to cheer Shannon. Hope you are back in stride before too long.
