Bare Bones Machines

Go, Don and Jean!

I've got a couple clowns

coming to run today, plus Frank hopefully. I think there might even be a very cute kitty cat running.

does anyone know how Don and Jean are doing?

EDIT - never mind, I found it

Don Bell 5:07:07
Jean Bell 5:08:41

Congrats, Don and Jean!

Congratulations Jean and Don

I know those aren't PRs for you but a marathon is always an accomplishment and completing another Marine Corps after all that you have done has to be satisfying. I thought of you throughout the morning trying to calculate what scenic wonder you would be passing by at that time. The two of you are inspirational!!

Congratulations Don and Jean

you both are great! I know it's been a tough year for you both in training and you must be so happy to have finished. We look forward to hearing all the details. I hope you are enjoying nice weather in DC and a wonderful post-race celebration.

Great Pumpkin Blown Away

First I have to say: Go Jean and Don!! even though I know you are finished by now.
Blazing pace Karen Shields in the Rolling Bones!!! Was Shannon the women's winner??? Looked like it to me. Congratulations to all of you on great times.
I don't know about MDI but it's been wild down here. We didn't have any power for 7 hours and spent last night playing pool by candlelight. It did not improve my game but made it more fun. It is less windy today but less than 60 mph winds still leaves a lot of room for improvement. My goals for this race were to hold an 8:15 pace but driving there, I realized that might be ambitious given the winds.
The first 2 miles were probably the most protected meaning the winds were swirling and sort of knocking us every which way, preferable to a head wind but still a bit of a struggle. I did those in 8:09 and 8:08. Then we got to the marsh. The wind was so strong from the west and we ran through here heading north and then heading back to the south. One way we were blown off the road and on the return into traffic. It was so hard to run a straight line. Miles 3 & 4 were 8:24 & 8:43. During the fourth mile I had my right arm up by my head to try and keep all of the debris from going into my eyes and mouth and this hunk of tree came flying into my arm/face guard. The thunk sounded like it was rotten and hollow so it was a lightweight branch. Next we curved so we were heading west and at this point we most definitely had the full onslaught of the wind in our faces but I was excited because I figured at the next turn we would have a really powerful tail wind for almost a full mile. That kept me going for the 8:50 it took to cover the mile. Why? why? why? was the wind now blowing from our south when every flag and leaf and flying tree branch had promised me a 40 mph tail wind for a mile? Not to be. The wind was again from the right, blowing hard across the Saco River and pushing us into traffic. 8:15 for that mile and who knows what for the final .2. I finished in 52:11 and I am so darn proud of that time. Meanwhile, Tom finished in 50:27. We think that's a pr on a really tough day.

After enjoying the postrace food and drinks we ran another 7 but did our best to stay off the roads and stick to trails although the whole limb falling thing made me a little anxious.

13 x 2 = 26 for the E'meter

Great Pumpkin 10K: RESULTS

125 Rae Chalmers 52:11 8:25

and Lou

L Ingrisano 54:34

Lou, sorry we missed you!

I'd love to hear what you thought of this wild and wooly run. Although based on what the news says the winds have done more damage on MDI than down here.
Hope you all are warm and comfortable.

19.8M in Bangor

here's the math - why round up?

10M this morning in Orono with Erik and Chris*, we ran in the woods to keep out of the wind. I spoke about the America East Championship Meet that I saw the day before, great effort by UMaine's Kirby Davis for the overall win and Josh Trevino for his fifth place finish - it was a tough course out there - lots of mud made for slippery going.

Went back out in the afternoon - ran the July 4th 3K course from Bangor to Brewer, the Brewer Turkey Trot course twice and back to Bangor via the July 4th 3K course for another 9.8. Best part was finding 43 cents along the way... that's a great thing about Brewer.

That's 82 miles for the week. Obviously, I have no idea why I'm running the miles - I think it was anxiety about the daylight savings time that has now gone into effect and the affect it will have on my running. Going to try running doubles in the morning and at noon - and practice the violin now in the evening. Anyone else play?

not violin

a clarinetist, though.

Great Job

Don and Jean!
Way to go Karen with a 7:25 pace, woowee, nice PR! I don't know... I think there must have been some sort of mistake:):):)

9 easy

(2)x Witch Hole-Paradise Hill figure-8.

Windy and interesting. No leaves to catch, but I just about had a startled White Tail in my lap.

Glad to see that "The Rolling Bones" went off without a

hitch. If it was as windy there as it was here it must've been an experience. My fiasco of the day was going for my usual 4:30 a.m walk which turned out to be 3:30 (I was wondering why it was so dark) and almost tripping over a keeled-over basketball hoop. You know the kind. The ones that kids put beside the road so they can use the road as the court? Well, thanks to Mr. South Wind this one was just about even with the centerline this morning. So, me being the good samaritan that I am bent over to move it out of the road and when I lifted it up, got drenched. I think I felt like Mr. Douglas on Green Acres does a lot of times. He's famous for stuff like that happening to him.

"Keep running!" as Steve says.

Aunt Betty-Eagle Lake

for 7.8 miles. The tree crew had a busy Sunday as there are lots of big trees down on the carriage roads that have already been chopped up. Still a big one across the road where the Aunt Betty loop breaks off from Eagle Lake parking lot. You can go around though because of the Y for the signs there. More dramatic for runners is the water over the carriage road between the two Eagle Lake parking lots.

Is the H.S. track lighted?

Speaking of the time change, is the high school track kept lighted, and is it ok to make use of it?
Jill is away for a few days, I'm trying to keep my motivation without my partner. And when she returns, we need a place to run together after dark, as her work schedule can be a nuisance to our running schedule.

Night lights

There are lights at the high school track, but they're only used to illuminate HS events. Normally, they're off. But Edenistas have been welcomed by the high school to use the track anytime when it's not in use by the school.

There should be a fair amount of natural light in the evenings this upcoming week as the next full moon will be on Saturday. Anybody up for some after work moon runs?

11M

for a windy run. 2M along the new single track section of Stone Cat. The trail winds along and goes up & down a hilly section of Willowdale that I've never been on since there aren't any offical trails. This trail appears to be originally made by mountain bikes, so there are lots of unnecessary turns. Pretty well marked, but a few tricky spots. Got to keep the orange ribbons in view.

Keep running!

Not first

but thanks, Rae, for assuming I could have been. : ) Thanks also to all the kind souls who grabbed the jogger and righted my kids after the largest gusts of wind swept through. It was a horrible moment to turn back and see it overturned. Four miles today, and a promise to Zoe that I won't stick her in the jogger for at least a week.

great races everyone

cgat,I'm running out of accolades.Keep it up.Can imagine how nasty windy it was for 10K in Saco Rae,great race.Looking at times among some runners I'm familiar with, looks like everyone was docked around 10 seconds per mile.Me,I had to work last night which did not faze me given the weather.Fairchild did not lose power thankfully.Always wreaks havoc with computers when it occurs.Did 14 miles last night and 26 tonight spinning along with usual core.I need some padded bike shorts. Will be able to join a church choir if I keep that up. Dave T.

Great racing

Nice work completing another Marine Corps Marathon, Don & Jean. Lots of good running in the Rolling Bones yesterday - it was fun just to watch. Vanessa ran 8 (Witches Hole, Paradise Hill, with some water/tree hazard bonus extras thrown in. I walked 5 with a wee bit of jogging snuck in. The back is better. Looking forward to more trotting around on Monday. Brian, I think you get bonus points for catching a white tail.

Weekend runs

We're still in the dark as of 7 a.m. Monday on Bayview. With three trees down directly on top of power lines, it'll be a while before we're up and running again. Hopefully they'll get to us today though.

Anyway, surfing the net is a challenge without power, so here goes for the weekend. As Shannon posted previously, we had an excellent run in the gathering storm Saturday morning. I don't know what it was, but the last 6-7 miles just seemed to flow by like buttah. Love that feeling. 14.5 total. Then Sunday, I warmed up 4.5 miles (and no 0-fers for me, I got my first leaf catch of the year!), chased MikeB for 5k in 18:50 feeling pretty strong but not at all fast, then warmed down 3, including chasing cash, checks, and signup sheets across the green. So call it 25 for the weekend.

Sunday Totals

Running/Walking = 208
