Go, Mark and John! Have a blast at VCM :)
I was running around Eagle Lake, in the morning, with a bunch of you. It was really nice... I can't wait to be back on the island this summer.

Congrats, Mark and John :)
Mark and John! I'd say the Eden season is off to a great start. Keep it coming!
gentlemen. Look forward to hearing your race reports. Did you guys run some of it together?
That wasn't one of my better efforts. No more 5-week marathon training cycles for me--that was kind of ridiculous.
My friend Jim and I ran together as planned and stuck with 8:00s as planned. It didn't feel all that easy for me, which wasn't part of the plan. Still, we had fun and got folks to cheer for us and goofed around for 15 miles or so. Then at 16 I started to feel woozy, told Jim to go ahead at 18, and stayed with it until 20, which I passed at 2:40 and change, still right on pace but out of gas. No surprise, it was already by far my toughest run of the year. I was guaranteed a PW no matter what anyway, so the last 10k was a mental struggle to keep going despite less than 0 motivation and a hurting body. I did the walk/survival shuffle thing for a while, then ran in the last 2.5 miles, mostly to get off the course and out of the rain as quickly as I could. But I came through with no chafing or blisters or anything more serious than mildly sore quads, so I guess it could be considered a success b/c #13 is finally behind me and hopefully I can do better with the next one.
Nice to see Cabot was once again a great success. Looking forward to reading about it.
I know that you probabilly think about your best time at VCM -but you are on your way back. Be carefull resting from this run and keep being consistent and you will be back completely by the fall. Congratulaion to John too.
Peter K.
will be after I go swim, though.
My 70.3 is next Sunday. Last week, I had emailed one of the Tri Coaches Who Is Keeping An Eye on Me and asked when I should start tapering, and he replied "I am a big fan of tapering for only one or two races a year. And if mooseman is one of those races, start reducing volume seven days before." Well, mooseman is 'one of those' races - thus, my taper starts this evening. I tried to sketch out a 'taper plan' (as opposed to a training plan!) but I didn't get anywhere with it - he said the idea is to reduce volume, but not frequency or intensity. So I still get to swim and bike and run a lot of workouts this week, but I guess they're supposed to be short and sweet. I want to email him and ask for some more specific guidelines for just exactly how short and sweet it's supposed to be, but I'm scared that I'll wind up with a week that is very, very little workout time... that makes me incredibly anxious, even just thinking about it. On the other hand, if I'm not good and rested, I will be wasting the ocean of physical and emotional energy I've poured into this, and I won't race as well as I could have. I should probably ask. I'm just scared to rest, I think.
I could guess at it, and hope for the best -- worked okay for Timberman last year. And then I would not have tooooo much taper madness, which would be nice. Or I could ask just exactly what would be best for a taper week, and, well, actually taper (as opposed to running and biking less, but swimming a lot and rationalizing that swimming doesn't tire my legs too much), and try to live through a week that I anticipate to be filled with what will seem like way too much rest, which we all know I don't handle well :P
off to swim. I'll deal with this later.
for asking and at least seeing what his idea of the taper volume is. Then you can go from there. Good luck! I'm cheering for you before it even begins! :)
I'll go craft an email - even if I am not psychologically ready to rest (will I ever be?!) my body certainly needs it.
One thing I need this week is to get used to swimming in the wetsuit. When I swam in it Friday, I felt like I had completely lost contact with the water, and had to trust that my arms know the right catch and pull and that my legs would balance my stroke out with a gentle flutter kick. When I took it off, and swam for a few minutes without it, it felt wonderful to actually feel the water again - on my forearms, my back, slipping off my shoulders as I found my stroke and started to 'hyrdoplane' a bit. I could feel it on my legs, almost ticklish. The wetsuit steals that intimacy. Also, having the material over my shoulders provides some resistance to the armstroke, and it tired my swim muscles out rather quickly. In all honesty, I do not like the thing, though it looks pretty cool.
road bike, wetsuit, when did THAT happen?
This is what I would do, left to my own devices:
M - longer OW swim, bike 90 min T - run 6 mi, short OW swim W - swim practice + bike 60 min Th - run 6 mi, short OW swim F - swim practice + bike 60 min Sa - run 4 mi + swim practice Su - RACE :D
we'll see what he says. I predict he'll tell me to take out the Wednesday and Friday swim workouts.
Tapering works well for key events so I also vote you get the specifics. You may find you can deal with the anxiety from not training as long better if you spend some of that additional time visualizing the perfect form you will be using, the perfect transitions, how you are feeling through the event, etc. Visualized practice can be very effective and help you whip the anxiety thing. Have a great race.
and I agree that visualization helps. I do it a lot with swimming - I picture how pretty my strokes look, and swim to match that image. make it pretty
I am most anxious about the cycling part of the race. This is a hard and technical cycling course - two laps around the lake, and it is, from one description, "never really flat, you're either climbing or descending." I've gotten more comfortable on flat terrain, but I get really frustrated with hills, as I feel like just as I've found the right cadence, I have to change gears again - that is what happened at Ironbear, and it was draining. I will visualize myself calm and smooth.
You stomped it again! Looks like the Hags and the Fossils did very well, too. Can't wait to hear all the reports. Congratulations to all, and have a safe trip home!
I can't wait to hear about it.
I spy a "penalty" column, for what might a runner recieve a penalty?!
A team/runner would receive a penalty for runners: -not getting off the road when a car comes by -not finishing the race team: -team members being on the wrong side of the road -being let out of a car that isn't parked -a car not having all four wheels off the pavement -a person hanging out of the window of a moving car -a car leaving the start area within ten minutes of the start of the race -crossing the road to support a runner at night... etc, etc.
Hope this helps. The Hags set a leg record on 14 as well as Evan. Congrats everyone!
...record was set by Sheri Piers. Evan took 1:40 off leg 14 also.
congrats. to the Maine-iacs!
It's party time at Cabot.
EL in 55:30, felt very relaxed. Great first run, all body parts feel great!
from our home almost to Seawall and back.
Congrats Maine-iacs!
Glad you're feeling great, Ginger!
easy 4, faster 4, easy 2. I think I failed to post 5 miles on Friday. Had a good time at the running class party yesterday. We are still cheating around here with beautiful cool mornings this late in May. Sure makes the running easier. Just birds and fragrant blooms to enjoy on a Sunday morning. Life is good in the neighborhood.
I'm glad I waited to run today, it was very pleasant out there. Great job Cabot trailer's and John R and Mark W great marathon.
I don't have a name for my bike.Alyie's is Chatter.I'll call mine Stimpy.16 miles of Stimpy bike love.Congrats to Maine-iacs!!What's that three in a row? It's officially a dynasty.2nd rehab run of 4 miles for me.Knee far stronger then mid-April when I initially tried running. All the cross-training paying off.My pace while half-stepping being careful was around 7.30.So great signs early on but I will take it day to day. Dave T.
and if you cycled, then ran, you did a brick!!!
hope your taper goes well. That's a tough call. Dave T.
My legs have not yet forgiven me for yesterday's track workout. And vice versa.
Chris, think how far you have come in 6 months since injury.Awesome keep it up! Dave T.
Thanks for the encouragement. 14 is 14, no matter how you slice it, and I am happy to be out there doing it. Now it is your turn!
saw results from MTC sponsered Pineland Farms Challenge.Chris took overall 4th in a tough cross-country 25k in 1.46.29-6.52 pace.Congrats cgat. Dave T.
Wasn't even the highlight of my weekend. I had a couple of my kids at Poland do really well at WMC's in Yarmouth Saturday. There's even a small bit article in todays pph and online regarding "Olympians helped WMC champion." Talking about Nick winning the mile running a very strategic and smart race that we had worked on...and even using youtube to show him some great track races won by kickers.
But yes, a good long run, it feels good just to be able to run and i ended up being fairly competitive. The top 3 guys were just amazing and took it out hard with a few others. I ran even, about 21 minutes or so a 5k...which is solid at Pineland. PR-racing won the team title as well. It's amazing how I can be at a completely different level then some of the guys (18min.+ for 5k's) yet on long trail races, they show up and make me look pretty mediocre. Coaching/Yelling/Split-taking from 9:30-6:30 in the sun for most of the day yesterday left me feeling pretty week too, thus not being too antsy to try and run closer to 19min per/5k today. Still about 7 minutes ahead of last years winner, the field improved dramatically.
Great job at Cabot and beyond and I'm glad you're seemingly stronger day by day. Docs Tavern as a comeback race DT? Chris
Great work. I am glad to see another trail runner in the making. We need more runs like the Pineland Farms.
will be a while before I race again but good early signs.Really want pr's so the gradual return is the way to go.Glad your foot injury is gone. Dave T.
I can't wait to hear all the stories.
1 mile warmup in Cheticamp from Tim Hortons to Start after quarter cup of coffee and half a bagel. Leg #13 - 15.88K - Finished 3rd overall - 1:07.02. 4:14 minute per km. Afterwards while waiting to recover - enjoyed cup of cider and music from Afroman. Thanks for the fireworks at the end Maine-iacs!
looks like you guys had a lot of fun. Are you home yet?
131 miles, two marathons, and Cabot
