First Strides with Eden Athletics

This seven week class is geared toward individuals who are interested in starting to run and will include sessions on proper footwear and apparel, stretching, injury prevention, and other issues related to developing and enjoying a regular training program. Classes will be held primarily on Wednesday afternoons at 5:30 P.M. at either the MDI HS track or on the Eagle Lake carriage roads. Some classes will also be held on Saturday mornings. Please check the schedule posted on this website for updates and additional details.

The cost of the program, which begins September 5th, is $25.00 and will include a year’s membership in Eden Athletics as well as entry to the Rolling Bones 5k run/walk race on October 27th. This event, in Bar Harbor, will serve as a “final exam” and celebration for all the class participants. For additional information about First Strides, or to pre-register for this program (space is limited), please post below, or email vicepresident@edenthletics.com.

In addition to the health benefits of running it is a great way to explore and enjoy Acadia National Park. We hope you will join us!

Hi Laura

Hi! I'm interested in joining

Hi! I'm interested in joining the class but I already run. I did cross country when I was younger, along with other races and I do track in the spring. I am mostly interested in bettering my self as a runner. I was wondering if this is the class for me and also if people in high school take an interest in it.

Hi Sydney..

Thanks for your interest in the First Strides program. Although it is designed as a class for beginning runners, I'm sure we would have some folks who could run with you. (Some of the instructors are pretty speedy.) Regardless of our level of ability, we all can learn more about stretching, diet, cross-training, running form, injury prevention, proper shoe fit, etc. Running magazines have essentially been recycling the same information for 25 years.

You are the first high school student to inquire about the class. At the risk of losing a perspective class member I feel compelled to tell you that cross-country is one of the best ways to improve as a runner and prepare for track season. The hills and varied terrain build strength and will provide you with a base you can then sharpen on the track. And then there is the whole wonderful element of training and racing as a team. I am reminded of that every year when the leaves begin to change, and it's been a long while since I last ran a high school cross-country meet. The smell of Atomic Balm also triggers these memories but is perhaps a less poetic image.

I have some information about the program in general and the specific topics we'll address next week that I'd be happy to send to you. Please email me at vicepresident@edenathletics.com
