I think I'll take the day off ~ what's your run today???

Meet the Emerson XC team

Edenistas who would like to meet some Emerson Tigers are invited to join the XC team for their annual run around Eagle Lake this afternoon at about 3:20 at the Eagle Lake boat ramp.

Yay!

Come run peoples!

Which way do the Tigers

run around the lake?

clockwise...

...probably

Tigers

...run clockwise.

Rest

Hate to miss running with the Emerson Team...I would love that!

swim

5400 scy, trying to sneak it in before my shoulders got sore. They were sore last night, as if the motion of my shoulder blades had rubbed raw the thin muscles underneath them. And I was okay this morning, until the 50s of butterfly that whispered we'll give you another thousand yards or so, and then you'd better get out. I need a massage!

How are everyone's legs feeling today?

600 w/u
6 x 100 pull on 1:30 breathe every 5/3 by 25
4 x 100 s/l/r/s on 1:40
400 kick fly/flutter
4 x 100 on IM on 2:00 (yes, lazy interval. warming up those other strokes)
4 x [4 x 25] on :30 - 1/2 sprint, build, easy/fast, fly/fly kick
400 pull every 4th length fast
4 x 50 fast into and out of the turn (with the turn fast too)
8 x 50 IM order by 2
400 free
4 x 100 IM on 1:45 hard fly and free
400 c/d
50 back + a bunch of dolphin dives to stretch out

bike run

I'm playing TRIATHLON!!!

bike - 60 min
run - 1.5 mi

Fine, so it was teaching spin class, which is not real cycling: thus the "playing" triathlon. And I'd planned to do 3 mi but I got a cramp in my back, and was getting tired. I'll save my miles for my MID-WEEK ESCAPE TO THE ISLAND!!!

massage: check.

A coincidence, but we had a wellness fair at the new fitness center, and the poster I saw had "FREE MASSAGES" written on it. SCORE!

Holy cow, you guys.

I just finished reading yesterday's posts. Can't we pick it up a little in the enthusiasm department? :-) Nice going at the races everyone!

6M walk for me this morning. Someone's got to keep the Edenometer rolling while you all are resting!

My thought of the morning: Why are so many people preregistering for races and then pulling a no-show? Granted, injuries, family emergencies, etc. are bound to occur, causing some to pull out unexpectedly, but if we use yesterday's MDI Marathon as an example, you'll see where I'm coming from: There were 669 finishers, which is a good turnout for eastern Maine, but there were also (approximately) 231 no-shows out of (approximately) 900 who'd signed up, which is over 25%. It sounds high to me, that's all, and at $50. to $60. a pop for most entrance fees, it also seems like quite a bit of money to leave on the table, especially in a world where some people are still starving.

Maybe that's high

for a number of no-shows; I have no idea about that stuff. But I do know that two of the women who were out on the course directing the runners got injured mid-training and came up anyway to help out. And they were from the midwest I believe. I was blown away by the fact that they would pay air fare, hotel rooms, all of it simply to come and, in any way possible, be a part of the marathon they'd been pointing toward. And I was seriously considering camping out to avoid the hotel charge when I went to Mass earlier this year...

No Shows

For several years, Jean and I worked packet pick-up at the Boston Marathon, one year being the final shift 12-6 on Sunday. There were an estimated 2500 no-shows at pick-up and I think they don't make a packet if you have deferred before the final 2 weeks, so the no-show rate is probably even higher. This is at $100 an entry! As far as I know Boston policy for deferment required the full entry fee for the next year.
We deferred this year from the Marine Corp Marathon because of Jean's accident. We had to pay a small fee, but we don't have to repay the entry fee for next year. Keep racking up those 6 mile walks!

Don

Don's on ...

the money. I think 25% is a little on the low side. I think the usual amount for a marathon is like 30 to sometimes 40%. My numbers may be high, but I'm pretty sure 25% is not unusual. That just goes to show how the training for a marathon can create injuries and how human life events can cause changes to good intentions (like deaths, divorces, births, etc.) Every race director knows this.

Keep running!

0 today

but some lifting. Yesterday about 13. Just 2M on Saturday to get to the Y & back where I did a legs, abs & stretching workout. Keep running!

Tom

Never got the chance to tell you I am sorry you are injured! Hope you can get back out there real soon! Thought of you often yesterday! :)

Suzanne

WAY TO GO!!!!! You ran a PERFECT race, you couldn't have changed anything. I hope you are super proud of yourself. Watching you come through the finish line even choked me up, and that's tough to do with me. You made the last 10k of a marathon look easy- I needed that. A 2.5 hr. pr's pretty decent:)

Thank you Ginger

I could not have stayed strong those last 6 without you there. You were wonderful and said all the right things. (Hope I didn't look to silly crying as I came across....damn emotional mess that I am!) LOL

Julie

Good job, girl! There were only a handful of people (okay maybe a few more) that looked as controlled and strong as you did at mile 20. It's hard for me to believe I was only 4 min. shy of your time in May. Knowing this, and actually seeing you run that strong pace gave me some of my confidence back for the next marathon.

ps. I knew you were going to get your BQ time all along, I was just trying to help alleviate unneeded pressure;) I'm the pressure expert!

Thanks! You'll do it!

I wasn't even thinking about the BQ ~ Frank pointed my current pace out to me to let me know I had plenty of time to play with. You know me ~ I turned the Garmin on and didn't bother looking at it until the end (except when Frank asked me what my time was at about mile 16). I was definitely struggling yesterday ~ just ask Frank or Bob! ~ but I made it...I think I've figured out how to tweak my training so I feel better...My mile splits were pretty good until the 30K mark which is where I really started having cramps...OK, I've babbled on long enough...

I think that's key...

not too think about time too much. It's awesome how much you can learn from every marathon.

wow--amazing weekend

for Eden--congratulations everyone!

5M

it wasn't wishful thinking... but was at Mile 23 pace. found 7 cents.

I surprised Amy and Tim in PE

I surprised Amy and Tim in PEI and ran the last 11 Km with Amy. They both did an amazing job. The end of Amy's race was heart throbbing.

The last part was ridden with hills - she was exhausted. I started to be wicked worried at Km 37. In Amy style she found the will and energy to pick it up. And then there was less than 2 Km to go and I knew this was cutting it way to close to qualify for Boston. I took a chance and gave her some tough love – reminding her that she did not bust her ass all summer not to qualify and that now was the time to pick it up. She dug real deep and picked it up. She was running full stride. I have no idea how she did it, especially that she was mumbling “I just want to get this done.” There was about 500 meters to go and Tim met her. We both were running with her, and then Tim said she only had 1 minute left. I was flipping out. We were yelling like crazy people, telling her to run fast. Her parents and brother were also there cheering on. She though the mat was the finish and slowed down and she was saying am I done? Then she finally crossed the real finish line. It was so exciting. She qualified with a full 7 seconds to spare. Then she says “I told you I would qualify” and she gives me this huuuuuuuuuuuuge smile.

What a day, what a race, and what an ending!

Cheers!

Unlike Ginger,

it is pretty easy to get me choked up. Needless to say, Michele, your story about Amy got me beyond choked, all the way to tears. There are few things more gratifying than racing yourself...and winning.

What a good friend you are to go to PEI.

Congratulations again, Amy!

This post

had my heart racing just like I was there! What an awesome story! What a great friend you are, and boy....she made it! Awesome!

6 miles

on a picture perfect morning.

check it out

Pumpkinman Sprint and Half Iron Distance Race

Maine's got its own Half-Ironman, Oooh, Oooh, OOOH.

I'm planning to do REALLY well at this race, just so you all know. I'll do Timberman sorta-taperd 3 weeks before, and then really go fast at this one.

I should get my bike out.

Couple of 5 minute PRs at Eagle Lake this afternoon....

...but I'll let others report.

Thanks, Frank and Judy!

Ya, couple of PRs.

Mine was a five minute, from 58:40 to 52:40. I am SO excited! Stephaine ran 57:40 to 52:30.

That's awesome Nora..

what did you Tigers have for lunch?

Lunch

A sandwich. Cheese and quinch jam, a kiwi, and some carrots. I also had half a trail mix bar on the bus. I don't know about Stephaine.

Ok..I'm going to

pick up some quinch jam and a few kiwis.

Good luck at Aurora! You all seem ready to run.

7k on the rower..with 5k at 23

Those pictures are precious.

Go, Emerson Tigers!

great job on the PR

Nora. I was impressed by everyone from Emerson out there today. Have a great day on Wednesday at the meet.

Thanks

...Judy! To be completely truthful, I think we could have a better boys team, but we're still great.

To be completely truthful....,

...I think endorphins and a little oxygen debt make us all heros, at least for a little while.

And as for the Tiger boys -- well -- I'd say I was totally impressed by Mohammed, a fifth grader who might not be quite four feet tall and can't weight more than fifty pounds. He'd never been around the Lake before, took off out in front from the start, and set what might be politely described as an 'ambitious' pace. Having both seen this sort of thing a hundred times and also indulged myself from time to imprudent time, I just snickered and winked to the other runners. "He won't last five minutes," I said. "Did anyone tell him about the hill?"

But, danged if he didn't hold that pace pretty much right through signpost 7 and up the backside too. Even the back hill didn't slow him down until right at the very top, which he reached a good minute earlier than anyone else. Granted it wasn't ideal pacing and he did pay for it a bit at the very end. But, while he did end up maybe two minutes behind Stephanie, Nora, Hannah, and Sarah, he not only was still running at the end, lactic distress no object, but also chose to veer off-road at signpost 6 and run the rest of the way along the shoreline, enlarging his total distance by that extra peninsula to well over the customary six.

So don't be dissing the Tiger boys. They're just up and coming. If Mohammed had to, I think he'd cover all five spots in an XC meet.

day off

Took Yesterday off.

Took today off.

Nice work everyone in your races.

Suzzanne, you ran awesome. Tim, 5th place at PEI, very cool.

Off to the pool tomorrow for another crazy session that should take me over 2 hours again. At least this time I've got Bunker to play with.

Hey!

Us little people need to know we ran a good race, too, Coach Cake!!! Dang...dissed again! ;>)

Late check-in from PEI

Sorry for the delay...been busy eating and traveling. Thanks for all the great support here; Eden is quite simply the best.

PEI was pretty spectacular. Highlight for me was watching Amy finish-- I had just resigned myself to the fact that she was not going to make in time for the BQ...and then she and michelle rounded the corner for the final 1/4 mile. Total roller-coaster.

I had a decent race given some really erratic self-pacing at the start and a poor job of hydrating. There was also a 8+mile stretch of running (22-34K) on a converted rail trail, the surface of which was more loose than the carriage trails; this section seemed to really zap my legs. Everybody ran the same course though, and there was one guy who passed me in the final 5k...I can't "blame" the course for that. I got a bit freaked when I wiped my forehead around 38k and all I felt was salt residue. It was a mentally tough finish for me, but I defenitely feel as though I gave it a solid effort and am very pleased with a sub-3. I proved to myself that Sugarloaf was not a fluke. Now to establish some new goals.

Great work at MDI Julie, Suzanne, Austin, RK, JimN...and anyone else I have missed. Julie's 16min course PR and Suzanne's 50% time improvement are both mind-blowing (especially on that course). Way to go Eden. And thanks again to all for the thoughts, support, and community.

20 mi

via bike on my work commute - the visual highlight being Witch Hole Pond. I can't say whether it was prettier at sunrise, when under a cloudless sky the pond looked timeless yet new, or in the evening when the lake was still and dark, the only disturbance a lone beaver traveling the surface, only lit by the tree tops getting the last light of the setting sun.

7.5 miles

Around the loop of Easton.

I was lucky enough to be in Baltimore this past weekend for the marathon, a one-man support team for my brother. I bicycled through the city and met him at 4 pre-arranged locations. It was cool to see the same group of runners several times and the different stages of exertion as the morning progressed. He successfully finished under his goal time. The following day, he was recognized by a fellow runner. This guy was close behind during the race and as he watched us work together with fluid, food and support, he decided he would stick it out and finish the race. This was a bonus for me, knowing how important strong support is and being able to wear the other shoes this time.

Congratulations to everyone who ran this past weekend.

Just had to say ...

Congratulations to Nora on that huge EL PR.

Thrilling write-up of Amy's finish - amazing run. Tim, great running and hanging in there through some tough spots too.

Beautiful writing Kev. We need to strap a camera to your bike.

Life is good in the woods and better with Team Eden's daily log.

Monday Edenometry

68 miles + 20 mi cycling and an hour of spinning + 5400 yds in strokes

And Emerson pounced on Eagle Lake again!
