He runs because he is alive, and has more life because he runs ~ anon
...A huki, huki, huki, huki, hukilau Ev'rybody loves a hukilau Where the laulau is the kau kau at the big luau
We'll throw our nets out into the sea And all the ama ama come-a swimming to me Oh, we're going to a hukilau
[Hi, Autumn!]
now I can't get that song out of my head!
We used to sing and dance the Hukilau on the pool deck when I was on the swim team. I'm not sure why.
Met up with Ginger, Karen, Holly & Dasher, & Amy N. for the final mile of their first trip around EL, ran the second loop with Karen, Ginger, & Amy, then ran Ginger to the top of the hill for her third lap. Sorry I couldn't be there for more! I'm sure you did AWESOME Ginger!
Briefly saw Vanessa & Bob as I was leaving ~ it sure was a beautiful morning out there!
.75 walking warm up, then 7 with Ginger. Wait...did I say 7 WITH Ginger? No, that's wrong. 7 mostly behind Ginger.....she was just incredible out there, and DeLaney and I could barely keep up! She was cracking jokes at mile 22 and her stride at the end looked like it could have been mile 1. That crazy girl is an inspiration!
Nice to visit with Frank and Karen, and also saw Bob and Vanessa. Hope you don't mind me saying so, Vanessa....but Bob looks awfully cute in his hat! :)
Now off to the dinner that the XC team is hosting for us...busy day!
of Eagle (by bike) with Ginger, Karen, Suzanne and Delaney. Ginger looked great - good cadence, normal stride, and she even threw in a surge over the last half mile. Good work!
Nice to see Bob and Vanessa on the hill getting in some walking miles.
10k on the rowing machine.
How's that treadmill working out Tom K? I would have met you to help you load it in to your truck the other morning, or at least taken a picture of you doing a test run on it at 6:30 by the side of the Beech Hill Road.
at Harbor house. 44:56 lots of pickups thrown in for fun.
First loop running with Ginger, Amy, Holly and Dasher. Second loop running with Ginger, Amy and Julie. On bike for my third loop which was Ginger's fourth loop and Frank, Suzanne and Delaney's first loop. A very loopy morning.
Ginger made it look easy out there today. She nailed that workout.

on Norway drive...wearing my new neon yellow windbreaker at least. Just back from 7 days in Japan and 3 days on airplanes. Mostly meetings, but we did spend three extra days touring Kyoto. We rented bikes for two days of visiting a few of the (>5000) temples and shrines. Then the last day we visited the Fushimi Inari Shrine with over 4km of mountain trail/steps in a continuous tunnel of orange torii. These shrines are dedicated to farmers and business people, and protected by foxes.
[Inari Torii Tunnel]
averaging 9:38 pace. 4 loops around EL. First loop was 58 min., loop 2 and 3 was 56ish, and loop 4 was 54min. and change. I was really pushing for a negative split on the 4th loop, and I was thrilled to have the energy to get it! I had lot's of Eden support out there, which was simply awesome and really gave me the push I needed. I probably would have lost interest and slowed down if it wasn't for the encouragement I got from Julie, Karen, Suzanne, and Frank along the way, thanks so much, guys. It was great to have Holly, Dasher, and Amy's company too, in the earlier miles. It's always nice to see Bob and Vanessa's smiling faces out there too. I was a little achy earlier, but I'm feeling pretty good now. Oh! and about Judson, are you wondering if he did back flips and freak out over my run? Well... no he didn't, I have to run 3:45 in a marathon before he goes that far. That's okay, I got a "nice" out of him:)
Judson did that workout once too!
I am in total awe.
since you didn't have a pacer on your last loop, and dialed down the pace yourself. (When I did that workout, Brian tricked me into running lap 4 at a pace that was way faster than I could have mustered on my own.) Judson may deny doing flips and freak outs, but trust me, he did them. He is just a little more laid back than the rest of us, and to me, his inimitable "niiiice..." comment is one of the best compliments one can get.
It's always nice to have fellow members appreciate and understand the value of negative splits. I'm just glad I didn't have to crawl like a turtle in the beginning to get my negative split for the final loop:) Yes, I agree- "niiiice" is just fine.
That Ginger's 5 hour marathon in that warm weather in Steamtown was a fluke and if she can run almost 24 miles around Eagle Lake in training then she's got 3:45 in 6 weeks. I usually don't have people go that far in training and I made sure to tell Ginger to keep things easy and recover proper after. I'm just a big believer in running at least as far or as long as you would in a race.
I've also run 5 loops of Eagle lake which I think helped me a lot before MDI 2004. About 5-6 weeks out is what you'll need to recover from it.
Alright off to do explore Hawaii with Autumn. 75 degrees here.
I'm just going to stay nice and easy for the first 10, then give Julie my watch and let her take the lead. I'll try to have a great, relaxing time and not think about pace AT ALL. Although, I'll try to respect "The Marathon" more this time and remember it's not going to be a downhill roller coaster ride to the finish.
I agree, no one should ever start pushing stuff in the first 10 miles of a marathon and I think more like 25-k to 17 miles before starting to race.
and hopefully marathon pace doesn't feel like I'm pushing until then. We'll just have to wait and see what the day brings. All I can say is, Julie better have some mouth dropping, eye popping, good blonde stories to tell along the way:)
...I do! You'll want to be a blonde after you hear my stories!
Anyone I train for a time goal is training to race not to train. So when Ginger gets done a run and it goes really well I'm happy and it gives me some feedback to where she is at fitness wise, but I'll be jumping for joy when Ginger runs 3:45. And she will because she knows she is training to race. She could have easily run 20 minutes faster than she did in that 4xEagle lake run. But she understands, now, that to do that she might as well get eagle lake certified and call it a race.
Anyhow, my time is up for this episode, Autumn's almost out of class and we are headed to the zoo and then maybe a museum, too hot to spend the whole day outside. The beach was lovely this morning, the water is so nice to swim in and surfers all over the place. My brother would be jealous. He told me he was surfing at Sand beach the other day. He'd love this.
Don't scare me! Well... if Julie's stories are really, REALLY, good, maybe in 6 weeks.
can do that in a training run next marathon should be goal or at least close.I wish I was in Hawaii.Feeling like late fall in Maine here.
and Karen have too. I was particularly thrilled that I was able to continue beyond 18 miles at the pace he wanted. Judson said it was a bit risky (but worth the risk) to jump up 8 miles in one week but on the other hand it would be excellent training if I could manage it. He wanted me to stop at 18 if there were any problems. I'm excited, sorry if I seem full of myself!
seem full of yourself, and have every reason to be excited over such an awesome workout! You are well trained and strong- physically and emotionally! Go girl! (Glad I could be a small part of it!)
Coach K Goupee really had an excellent slide show, an individual reconition for every team mate, and encouraging outlooks for the 2008 off season and future goals. It's times like these that make me glad to be a parental athlete.
...on a great season.
gore-tex running pants made an appearance tonight.Mid-40's and still easily shorts weather but the repaired knee stiffens up in cold air.Nice long run Ginger!
Enjoyed a beautiful walk with Vanessa to check out the waterfall bridge near Jordan Pond. Good to see Julie in the parking lot & what a great team out there with Ginger, who made 24 look awfully easy. Great job on those negative splits too.
Life is good in the woods.
in Lewiston... call it a dog chase...
running to the Y and then on the mill. Another 2k on the rower, stretching and a jog home.
Great workout Ginger. I've thought about trying that workout before, but have never been able to convince myself to past 3 loops. Great neg split.
easy. It was actually quite fun, the key is good company and I certainly had that!
What do you think of Hawaii, and did you drink Cosmo's on the plane?
Hawaii seems great. As soon as i'll explore i'll report further.
Cosmos, are you kidding me. Oh, that's one of your jokes, got it!!!
is pretty neat. It's a volcano you hike (all steps) from the inside. Tim and I hiked it; I remember having a hard time seeing where I was going inside the mountain. Everyone else seemed fine, but I had to feel my way along the walls and ask Tim for guidance. Come to find out, I forgot to take my sunglasses off, heehee! Boy, things really brightened up once I took those off! We had quite a laugh about that!
You would forget to take your sunglasses off going into a dark cave.
