Monday, April 14: Daily Log

I stopped to pick up the bagel
rolling away in the wind,

The Bagel

annoyed with myself
for having dropped it
as if it were a portent.
Faster and faster it rolled,
with me running after it
bent low, gritting my teeth,
and I found myself doubled over
and rolling down the street
head over heels, one complete somersault
after another like a bagel
and strangely happy with myself.

Rest

:)

Paddle

Rest legs, paddle 60 minutes.

43 minutes

Very easy 6 miles, some drills and stretching after.

33 minutes easy

5-miles, Around Little Long pond and then some. Oh my, it was like running on feathers after destroying my legs on the pavement all winter. Both runs today with Matt F.

I got some good sprints in at track practice. Some of those kids are fast.

5 miles

Bozo's great, he really helps me keep my easy days easy:) We were planning on 7 miles but 2.5 miles into the run he sat down, basically saying he'd had it! We listened to Bozo, and turned around. Great company too; Marion, Holly, Buck, Poppy, and Dasher. Amy, Karen, and Dilly kept going. I think Dilly might be a future marathoner.

Thanks again for relacing my shoes, Tom. My feet love you:)

Hmmmmm

I always put "rest" for Mondays, but then I do major housecleaning. I was thinking today I need to count this as cross training!!

6.55 miles.....

echo lake-lurvey spring loop! First time this spring. Some snow, ice and mud, but I'll take it. 53 minutes. Nice and warm too. Good luck in salt lake Judy!

I took Chatter to the bike shop

and now I miss her. Why? (It's not like I've been riding)

Moosey's coming, Moosey's less than two months away actually. I'm in awesome swim shape, I'm in decent run shape but that means nothing if the bike wrecks my legs. So little by little, I have been trying to get myself out on that bike.

Last Sunday, I came up to school because Zach was up here visiting friends. For the first time since fall, I brought Chatter. At 11pm last Sunday night when we were bringing my stuff into my apartment, I rode circles around him in the parking lot. It felt good, the craziness of being at school on a weekend (that boy better realize he's pretty special, I don't spend extra time here unless there's a REALLY good reason for it), the cold night air, an hour I rarely see.

Chatter spent the week in my room, next to my bed. I brought her home on Thursday, brought her back with me this morning, nearly took her out this afternoon but realized a bike that's spent the winter indoors probably needs some attention from someone who knows what they're doing, before she gets taken out.

So she's at the bike shop.

I felt a strange sadness when the guy took her out of my hands, like I didn't want to leave her. I feel like I'm missing something. Which I don't understand - she's been with me for the past couple weeks and I haven't ridden her so really, I've got a week of swim and run, guilt-free, no "yeah I know it's nice out but I'm going to swim even though I should be riding."

I remember Ed telling me once, you'll like cycling, you can do lots of it every day and not get hurt. I wonder if when she comes back, if that will kick in, if the simple feeling of missing her will make me take her far, far away when I get her back.

In the meantime, if you're looking for me, I'll be figuring out how to whip myself into cycling shape.

the bike

Two months til mooseman huh? My two cents. . .

You should ride at least 3 days a week for at least an hour building up to longer rides.
Dare I say it, you could swim a little less to allow for longer bike sessions, maybe SB bricks with shorter (for you) swims then onto the roads.
If short for time, do hill repeats. Cadillac climbs work for me if I'm limited.

Of course you're experienced at this distance and know all this.

I like to do my swim focus during the taper two weeks before the race. I can bring in some pace and feel for the water and get used to the wetsuit while cutting back on run and bike hours. Many swim limited triathletes will ramp up swimming at the end this way after pushing hard with the bike/run in the 4-6 wks before. Seems to work

2.7mi - very short run

after work on my rest day. 20:39 I would have run at lunch, but my dentist appointment took quite a while.

Legs should be good for the speed run/intervals tomorrow.

Blisters

Karen is right about the double layer sox. Also instead of using Body Glide slop on a good layer of Vasaline.
Judy enjoy the day at the great Salt Lake.

Suzanne-more Feet

here's a book I have from when I was having mega-feet problem...

Fixing Your Feet: Prevention and treatments for Athletes.
John Vonhof 3rd edition Wilderness Press

It's mostly geared towards adventure racers who run through swampy jungles for a week and get moldy and blistery feet - and ballerinas who stand on their toes all day. There is a whole chapter about blisters. I'd be glad to loan it to you...do you want it?

I would love to borrow it...

...thank you! How can I hook up with you?

AMAZING

There is just no other word to describe Emily LeVan. I am captivated by her log. I just can't even wrap my brain around caring for a sick child, training for trials, not to mention all of the regular responsibility that comes with being a wife, going to work, and running a home. I pray she can find some time to rest and arrive at the starting line refreshed. She deserves this. What an inspiration....not just as a runner, but as a human being. Amazing!

I agree

did you read the most recent post? I thought it was neat that her husband wrote it.
