Ride of Silence

Dear Bicycle and Pedestrian Folks:

Wednesday, May 21st is the date of the Ride of Silence, a bicycle ride in honor of Dino Tortu, Jina Haslam, and others who have lost their lives or been injured due to automobile crashes with bicyclists. We have planned a 10-mile bicycle route and a shorter (approximately 4 mile) bicycle trip on that day at the Head of Mt. Desert Island. We will meet at the Bar Harbor KOA campground (the one at the stoplight at the Head of the Island) at 5:15 p.m. on May 21st. We hope to follow the ride with a cookout at the campground, depending on whether they have the facilities to keep us dry in case of rain. Stay tuned for further details, but mark your calendars for May 21st.

The goals of our Ride of Silence are to honor those who have lost their lives or been injured, draw attention to the need for better bicycling and walking opportunities on MDI, and encourage everyone to share the roads. The Ride of Silence is an event held nationwide on May 21st. For more information, visit www.rideofsilence.org.

We owe thanks to the Bar Harbor KOA Campground for hosting us. Please spread the word among your bicycling friends. Also, please remind everyone that they need to wear a helmet for this event and should dress in bright clothing. Everyone is also welcome to wear a sign or make a sign for their bicycles drawing attention to the Ride of Silence and honoring cyclists who have been lost.

Thanks to all. Don’t hesitate to call me (288-3340) or send an e-mail if questions.

Thanks,

Stephanie Clement
