BLTBelgrade Lakes Triathlon A good day a good race. We arrived fri evening for check in with a hailstorm leaving 1in deep pea and marble ice everywhere. The hail tore a lot of leaves on to the roadway and muddied up the trails thru camp there. Next morning the hail had melted but the lake surface temp had dropped, someone said 4-5 degrees, thanks for tri wetsuits. The swim was Ok for me. Some lessons are quickly forgotten in this case frequent sighting in open water races. For the muggles (non tri folk) out there, sighting is when you look up between breaths to stay on course for the next marker buoy on the swim course. In the pool there's lane lines and the bottom to keep you straight. In open water, bigger races allow for checking position with those around you if you're a middle of the pack swimmer like me. This race had about 200 entrants in the water so you have to look up. Something to practice. The bike was rolling with several stretches flatter. I was able to move up decently on the hills and hold things on the flats. Around 20.5 mph ave. Very pretty area for cycling. The run also had rollers but lesser than what we do regularly on the Island. I continued to pass others and was passed only twice on the run, one of whom I passed back. 39 min. run split for 5.7+ mi, a bit under 7 mi/min pace. Could have pushed more on the run but am nursing a tender knee and want to save some for the 70.3 tri. in three weeks. I finished 17 overall, 2nd in my age group. dr dave |
