WS100.com

The Run is conducted along the Western States Trail starting at Squaw Valley, California, and ending in Auburn, California, a total of 100 miles. The trail ascends from the Squaw Valley floor (elevation 6,200 feet) to Emigrant Pass (elevation 8,750 feet), a climb of 2,550 vertical feet in the first 4½ miles. From the pass, following the original trails used by the gold and silver miners of the 1850’s, runners travel west, climbing another 15,540 feet and descending 22,970 feet before reaching Auburn.

The Race begins at 5:00 am on Saturday at the west end of Squaw Valley. Runners must reach the finish line no later than 11:00 am the following day in order to be eligible for an award.

Run strong, Susannah B.!

Western States 100-miler canceled

due to forest fires in the area. While Susannah is really disappointed, I imagine her competitors are secretly relieved. Word is she had a pretty good shot at the women's title.

sorry to hear that

I'll bet Susannah would have done well.Maybe they will reschedule it?My father's best friend ran it I think around 1994.Charlie Hunter. My dad was living in San Jose at the time near the end of his career at National Semiconductor and crewed for him.In preparing for the race Charlie would rise at 2:00am and do 30 mile training runs in the dark on the trails near his home carrying a flashlight. Then he would go to work all day in Silicon Valley at National as a design eng.A true animal. He actually fell asleep at one point during the race and took a bad fall breaking a few toes.He still finished and got his belt buckle.

It doesn't look

as though they will reschedule, which is too bad. Just think of all that training time and effort wasted. It isn't as though you can just sign up for another 100-miler next week...there really aren't too many of them around, and I understand that they fill up quickly (go figure). I am trying to convince SB to come run the Burning River 100, which runs literally through my backyard. Hey, I know, maybe Eden can put together a whole team of runners! Now that would be a field trip worth bragging about!

...that has to be a big letdown

I would run a couple marathons in consecutive weeks to use all those training miles in the bank not to mention all the adrenalin and anticipation ready to be used.Great idea for Burning River 100!
