Run in the rain!

9.09 miles SWH/Manset

I am proud to report that DeLaney slept through the night last night, and I had a fabulous run today!

Had a near collision with John S! I was rounding the Kings Lane corner and there he was. It was my fault, I was on the wrong side but hadn't crossed yet because of traffic. If you almost run into someone, its nice when its a friendly, familiar face! :)

7.5M

along the riva' with a new victim, I mean enlistee. Then some vanity sets and some stretches to boot.

Keep running!

A nice light run in the light rain

4 miles Manset to Seawall and back. I also had a fabulous run including running into Suzanne (almost). I was not paying attention to where I was going either paying attention to the traffic instead. Lots of traffic today. Lots of less than courteous drivers today. Spent a fair amount of time on the shoulder dodging cars but still had a nice run. Long run tomorrow!

Injury, Treatment, and Fear

If you've ever had a stress fracture then you'll remember the fear of that first run, that you'll take one too many steps and the bone will crack again. Fear of getting hurt again is almost as paralyzing as the injury itself: you wish so badly to put your shoes on and go run (put a swimsuit on and dive in, aero tuck and ride), but... what if it comes back? Then you're just back to the beginning and the tornado emotions of Being Hurt.

The "bunny bite" is gone. It wasn't going away on its own so today, a doctor drained the fluid from it, switched the syringe to one filled with cortisone, and injected that through the same needle. I didn't watch, but when Chris told me the needle was out, I asked "so the bump is gone?"
"No."
"WHAT?"
"Now you've got a bump filled with cortisone."
I was caught between tears and laughter. The cortisone will 'sink in' but damnit, I still have what looks like a bunny bite!

I've been babying a knee for awhile too (like, a month) - the left one, patellar tendon achiness, so I asked about this too. Apparently, my left hip flexor is a lot tighter than the right one, and that puts more strain on the tendon. Answer: stretch hip flexors, quads, calves, am OK to continue activity as long as I ice after.

This means: I am OK to get back to training. And I'm scared out of my mind that I'll get hurt again, that my knee will get worse (but it got no better with that 6 days of complete rest, which actually makes sense: if you don't treat the underlying issue, which we think is tight hip flexors, why would it!).

I have to wait until the cortisone settles out. I still need to catch up with Tom K and re lace my shoes. And then, I may need someone to hold my hand like you would a frightened chlid's, and run around Eagle Lake with me.

I may be in town tonite and start back with a very short run like a flat mile or so the lake may be to much to do first run back
or be like me and not run again until Beach to beacon next week

8.5m

Great route in the rain from Jordan Pond House to Eagle, Bubble, & back, showing a friend, Lisa, how cool our waterfalls and carriage trails are for a good time. I couldn't keep that "Singing in the Rain" tune out of my head. Now if I could just remember all the words. Just missed Julie and Karen, but Vanessa, who ran 5, got to see them. Life is good in the woods.

5.25mi

with RK. He got me to do some stride drills and taught me some strategies for the hills and turns I'll encounter tomorrow. Also did about a half mile or so of running in the sub-7 range. 39 minutes total.

really sad to hear about the fire at the library on Swan's Island. I've seen the library grow during the years and know that a lot of one of a kind items have been destroyed. Wishing Candis and everyone the very best.

Swan's island.....

Same here, RK. There is a rebuilding fund started at the First in Bar Harbor if people want to help.

Harry B..good luck

with the Escarpment Trail run on Sunday! Keep us posted.

Speaking of long trail runs and burning lots of calories..don't forget its Dine-Around Day on MDI in support of Island Connections.

Peter K

is also running that. I saw him a couple times this week and he's excited and ready to race!

Go Peter K..

Go Harry B! Hope the temps stay reasonable through the weekend.

10 miles

So sad to read about the library fire.

Good luck Harry and Peter!

another 12 miles,core

tried to log in earlier but some pc issues prevented me.I thought it might be the site but it was across the board after trying cnn.com for instance. After a three finger salute(boot)and power down the old Dell is working well.Weather favorable at 8:30pm start at Back Cove.Around 70 but humidity was noticeably absent from earlier this week.Very enjoyable run.

11 miles

Ran 11 miles on the Eagle-Bubble-Jordan loop with Julie. Saw Ginger, Amy, Vanessa and Peter out running in the rain. We never saw Bob and his friend, but we did spot a big pile of Fuel Belt bottles that I think belonged to them.

Thanks to Julie for distracting me from the rain with such good conversation. I probably would have turned around at mile 3 if she hadn't been there.

a fun run!

Running in the rain today was like being a kid again! Well, almost...the light rain is fun, the downpour we could have done without, but we DID stay cool!
