Tuesday, August 19: Daily Log

it's Sand Beach day! Hope to see a bunch of you tonight for SANDCASTLES!!!

all keyed up

I woke up nauseous and starving, which is never a good sign. Took the bike out - I did something to my right anterior tibialis muscle, though I'm not sure how, so I reasoned that cycling would be better than running, take away the impact. Plan was to ride, then open-water swim at Echo Lake. When I got near Sand Beach I thought hmmm maybe I'll grab my wetsuit and ocean swim instead but by the time I finished the ride, I was wicked hypoglycemic and dehydrated - I've never craved Gatorade so much in my life. And I have three layers on (swimsuit, long sleeve shirt, wool sweater) but I'm freezing. Hopefully I can sneak away and get the swim in once I get my blood sugar back up.

bike: 80 min

today's just a whirlwind

I couldn't find settled even in the water, twice across Echo Lake. Cold, it felt okay but my skin was cold the whole time. Shoulder felt okay I think, and on the plus side, anterior tib felt temporarily better.

Days go by so fast, I want to just sit and breathe

swim: ~30 min

BH Half Marathon Update

I just talked with Lisa T. at the "Y" and she asked me to let everyone know that there are only 16 openings left for this years 1/2 marathon. She said she is getting applications in the mail everyday and that those spots will fill quickly. Please spread the word if you know of someone planning to run that has not registered yet.

Correction

...now there's 14 openings left. :)

make that thirteen,

I scampered over and signed up too. Karen, thanks for the heads-up.

I guess

the top 10 runners will all bandit it since there is a heck of a field coming for the afternoon wedding. Oh, I forgot, it's a fundraiser, not a race.

Good to see Brian & Judson after their run. Enjoyed a great run with Shannon, Suzanne, Adria, DeLaney, & Zoe. Vanessa ran 4 & was moving well out there. Life is good in the woods.

6.5 at EL

The little bit extra was from back tracking to find a stuffed duck that DeLaney threw overboard. (Shannon ran back, I was happy to walk for a minute or two, as even with strollers Bob and Shannon are speedy!) Had a wonderful run with the crew Bob mentioned, and it was nice to see Judson and Brian in the parking lot, and of course lovely Vanessa.

After the run, I met CeCelia for breakfast at Jordan's...a perfect morning!

Thank you all for the wonderful advice I got both on and off the board regarding marathoning for fun....yup, I'm in....registered for MDI last night. I'm quite excited! Fun, fun, here I come! :)

Running and Celine

Although I really would like to run the BH 1/2 again, for me it is way too close to Portland. Instead, I decided to run the 1/2 at the Marathon des Deux Rives SSQ in Quebec City this Sunday. The bonus is that there is a FREE Celine Dion concert on Friday night on the Plains of Abraham - 200,000 free tickets were distributed. They just had the same type of concert for Paul McCartney and I was told it was absolutely phenomenal.

Vive Quebec et le 400ieme!

PS Hope this appears in the righ section!

Good Luck

Bonne chance, Michele!

Go Michele!

Let us know how it goes.

with Sara and Tom. Awesome run.

8M and change

Late start around 10:30 7B/EL loop at pace, which for me turned out to be a little over 8 mpm. Then about a 1/2 mile run cool down for a little more than 8 miles. Rained was coming down pretty hard towards the end of the run. Think I almost got hit by Julie on her bike while in my own little world working up the 7B trail:)

Yesterday Amazon had Garmin forerunner 305's for $189. Of course today it's not on sale anymore but there are a number of websites listing them for under $200. I've been considering purchasing one. Besides the fact it is a cool piece of technology, I think it would help me in my training. Any opinions, experience, etc...?

Beware

of the Garmin. They can be addicting. :)

Seriously, I do love mine....when I first starting using it I timed every little thing. Its nice to know exact distance and pace. But you also have to know when to turn all the bells and whistles off and just run for feel and fun....but it sounds like you're very grounded so I bet you won't have that problem. :)

I would

totally be playing with all the bells and whistles. I'd be the guy who runs off the road into the ditch because he was looking at his wrist and not watching where he was running.

I never thought about the potential for injuries with this device. Kinda like the Blackberry thing that was in the news a couple of weeks ago. Hmmmm...

garmins

I really like mine for pacing, especially on long runs. There are oodles of options...ave pace, current pace, lap pace...all tracked, but you choose what and how many to view while you are running. I also really like when I'm running new routes because I get the mileage...talk to Tom...he's a wiz with his. I still haven't found the little man in mine, so I have lots of adventures to go.

Garmin 305

I love my Garmin 305. I bought mine on sale for $209. If I were buying one today, I would buy the newest model instead. I've seen pictures and it looks much smaller. Still, the 305 is great!

Thanks

for the feedback. I like the sleek look of the new 405 too, however the sticker price is a bit steep. $299 for the GPS, $349 w/ the HRM, OUCH!

SAND BEACH -

my weather.com forecast is saying rain and 10-11mph winds at 5-6pm. That is not fun beach weather... so... I will go to the beach if it changes and is SUNNY at 5pm, if it's still icky weather, maybe we can go some other day this week.

with RK in Bangor. Rain wasn't too bad, but it's gonna be a bit chilly tonight.

We also saw a few Budwiser Clydesdale trucks so RK ran up ahead and asked them if he could sell me to them. Ding dong.

Happy Belated Birthday RK!

Sorry I didn't say it yesterday!!!

thanks for all the wishes! planning to see you all in northeast harbor this weekend.

9 miles

whereas 8 would have been plenty.
