...Notes...In his first year of running, Soph sensation Sam Burgess set a course record that was set the year before ('59) by Jerry Crommett (Portl)the NEW ENGLAND mile champ, by 13 seconds...It was to be the first of 3 in a row in the Class L division...The following week, Sam led in the N.E. X-country meet by 15 yards with less than a quarter of a mile to go when he pulled up lame with a nasty pull...Burgess would go on to win a couple of State mile titles in track......

@UMO..Total runners for Class L,M,S: 449; total registered:500....11-3-1960....Same course used from 1954 to 1960...Undefeated (Soph) sensation, in only his first year of running, set a course record on the 2.5 mile course thru the woods on the UMO campus..The record he broke was set by Jerry Crommett (PORTL), the NEW ENGLAND mile champ, by 13 seconds...The following week in the N.E. X-country Championships, Sam had @15-20 yard lead on the talent loaded field w/ less than 1/4 mile to go, but, pulled up lame w/ a nasty pull...Burgess would go on to win 3 Class L Titles in a row & win (2) Mile Championships in track....RESULTS: (1)Sam Burgess (MORSE)12:11 (2)Herman Pellitier (CARIBOU) (3)G.
