Bangor Labor Day Road Race (3rd Annual) 1964

RK Notes: The 3rd Annual Race. An article did preceed the race results. It's basically a duplication of the 1963 article but it does mention Dave Farley returning to defend his title. I've gone straight to the results the next day.

Dave farley Wins 5 Mile Race
(Bangor Daily News, September 8, 1964)

Brown University record setter Dave Farley of Orrington successfully defended his Bangor five-mile road race crown Monday by besting a field of 14 rivals in 80 degree temperature.

His time was approximately 1:45 above his 26:55.4 record a year ago as he finished in 28:40.8, 25 feet ahead of spunky Bob Hillgrove of Rockland who pushed him all the way. In third place was former University of Maine runner Ben Heinrich, 25 feet behind Hillgrove at the wire.

This trio stayed even from the start of the Paul Bunyan status down Main Street to Railroad where Heinrich dropped behind slightly.

Farley and Hillgrove were still neck-and-neck at State and Exchange Streets and again at the top of Holland Street Hill, better known to the distancemen as Heartbreak Hill.

Heinrich stayed a close third and Paul Petrie of Old Town was fourth. Farley took a slender lead heading down West Broadway but Hillgrove pulled even on Buck Street and not until they entered the Bass Park oval did Farley get back in the lead. The one lap around the track gave Farley running room and he added to his lead while Hillgrove got ahead of Heinrich but the latter made a game bid at the finish.

Alan Howard of Brewer was the first schoolboy runner to finish, placing fifth, followed by Mark Stevens of Winthrop.

Eddie Ouellet of Augusta was seventh, only fourth places ahead of his dad, the veteran, runner, skier and bike racer, Sam Ouelette who will be 60 years old next month. Bob Michaud of Lewiston was eigth, Geoffrey Low of Rockland was ninth, Bud Farley of Bar Harbor, 10th, Sam Ouelette, 11th, Louis Arasate of Bangor 12th, Steve Ross of Auburn, 13th and Ray Lafreriere of Lewiston 14th.

The 15th runner was Alton Sabin of Bangor who was stricken with a cramp half-way down Main Street.

The unseasonable weather made it a grueling test of entries in the third annual event. Trophies were presented by the sponsoring Bangor Recreation Department.
