Some of the state's best long-distance runners will go to the starting line today at 2 pm in the fourth annual Bangor Five Mile Road Race.

The race will begin in front of the Paul Bunyan statue on Main Street, proceed through the business district and end in front of the grandstand at Bass Park.

Among the top flight runners entered are Ben Heinrich of Orono, a University of Maine graduate student who won the Maine State Collegiate two mile championship while an undergraduate; Rockland's Bob Hillgrove, who has won a flock of road races and is the Maine AAU one and three mile champion; Fred Judkins of Upton, an outstanding cross country runner at the State University; Augusta's Steve Turner who won the State "M" two-mile title in the schoolboy ranks, and a number of others.

Bangor Civil Defense units will report the location of the runners at various points along the route to the announcer at Bass Park who in turn will keep grandstand spectators informed.

Sets Race Mark.
(Bangor Daily News, Sepotember 9, 1965)

Bob Hillgrove, the ex-Rockland High School runner who rates as one of the best long-distance runners in modern State of Maine history, captured the annual Bangor Labor Day Road Race Monday in record time.

He covered the five-mile course in 28 minutes, 36 seconds to shatter the old mark of 28:40.8 which was set last year by Brewer's Dave Farley.

Starting in front of the Paul Bunyan statue on Main Street, winding his way through the downtown business district and finishing in front of the grandstand in Bass Park, Hillgrove edged a pair of former University of Maine standouts, Fred Judkins of Upton and Ben Heinrich of Dryden.
