Bob Hillgrove of Rockland, defending champion and rated by many as the state's top distance man, had to sprint in the stretch at Bass Park Monday to beat out Fred Judkins of the Waterville A.C. in Bangor's [sixth] annual five-mile road race.

His time was 27.17.3, over the record of 26.57.4 he set a year ago.

Hillgrove said he expected to get a close race from Judkins "As I think he's in top form now and it was just as close in the Lewiston run earlier this year."

SPRINTS TO VICTORY

The lean Rockland runner who let Judkins pace him by a few feet the last two miles, hit the head of the stretch of the rac track ten feet behind. As he made the turn he spurted to overtake, the former University of Maine distance star and won by 30 feet.

In winning he beat out a field of 44 entries, the largest to date and one that included ages 14 to 60. All but one finished.

In starting the event sponsored by the Bangor Recreation Department, Hillgrove, Judkins and Tom Maynard representing Colby College ran side by side onto Exchange Street. Rick Rowley of Wayne kept pace to that point but dropped a bit.

The trio remained the same at Valley Avenue but Heartbreak Hill of Holland Street took its toll and Maynard dropped back 50 feet. From the corner of Ohio and Wiley Streets Hillgrove and Judkins began their two-way battle and they started neck-and-neck most of the distance. Heading onto the race track at Dutton Street Judkins took a small lead and held it until Hillgrove made his bid going into the stretch. Maynard held to third place, and Rowley was fourth the same as a year ago.

Al Harmon, one of 11 Maine Maritime entrants, finished fifth followed by Alan Howard of Waterville, Ismail Sheken of Maritime, Ralph Grant of Waterville, Clayton Nowell of Maritime and Charles Ingram of Waterville.

Carmen Comeau, 14 year old of Princeton high school running with sneakers finished 35th. Barely winded, he said he does a great deal of distance running in practice.

Race Director Pete Furrow had a lunch ready for contestants and officials at the auditorium following the event that drew hundreds of spectators along the route and at the finish line.

The race was held in honor of Raymond "Shorty" Smith, former outstanding Bangor athlete who has been ill. Following the race Hillgrove telephoned Smith and told him he would look forward to meeting him another year.
