Island Runners Turn Out For Grand Willey

Twenty-one Mt. Desert Islanders ran in the 1979 Grand-Willey, the Ellsworth Road Race sponsored by the Grand Theater and Willey's Dept. Store on Saturday, August 11. Of the 182 persons entered, island residents placed in the 6.2 mile race as follows:

3rd place-Harvey Barlow, Bar Harbor, 32 min. 55 sec.; 4th- Jonathan Howland, Bar Harbor, 33 min. 38 sec.; 22nd- Jon Fox, Mt. Desert, 36 min. 59 sec.; 39th- Kevin Curran, Bar Harbor, 39 min. 3 sec.

Also Placing were 46th- Peter Estonette, Bar Harbor, 40 min.; 75th- Jonathan Gates, Salisbury Cove, 43 min. 16 sec.; 77th- Bruce Kelley, Mt. Desert, 43 min. 35 sec.; 78th- Charles Lerner, Somesville, 43 min. 41 sec.; 91st- Sandy McFarland, Bar Harbor, 44 min. 26 sec.; 92nd- Richard Davis, Seal Harbor, 44 min. 35 sec.; and 100th- Gary davis, Seal Harbor, 45 min. 50 sec.
Other island runners in the race were Tom Macauthy, Salisbury Cove, 47 min.; Carol Meriwether, Bar Harbor, 47 min. 27 sec.; Ivey Menzietti, Seal Harbor, 48 min.; Cheryl Davis, 50 min. 48 sec.; Robert Carol, Salisbury Cove, 51 min. 2 sec.; Dana Reed, Bass Harbor, 51 min. 4 sec.; Sheldon Goldthwait, Bar Harbor, 51 min. 44 sec.; Mary Ratner, 51 min. 55 sec.; Patricia King, Mt. Desert, 54 min. 55 sec.:eric Richmond, Bar Harbor, 59 min. 23 sec.
First place was taken by Peter Weith of Deer Isle, who finished in 32 min. 6 sec. and second place by Gerry Clapper of Bucksport in 32 min. 46 sec.
The Technical Director for the race was Stephen Coffin, Northeast Harbor native now living in Hancock Point and teaching at Ellsworth High School.
