2nd Annual Northeast Harbor 5-miler

Flushed with the satisfaction of achievement, over 100 runners sprinted to the finish line Saturday in Northeast Harbor. They had just run five miles through that village's residential streets and along its scenic shore roads, competing in the Second Annual Northeast Harbor Road Race.
One Hundred and forty-one registered to run for fun and for the benefit of Northeast harbor Ambulance Fund. After Paying operating expenses, organizers of the race turned in $385 to that local volunteer ambulance corps.
Breaking the ribbon at the finish line was Ellsworth's Sheldon Booze, a physical education major and a Senior at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Eight Seconds behind him was Bar Harbor's Jon Howland. Jon finished first last year after taking 38 seconds longer to run a different five-mile course. Running over a minute and one-half faster this year was Seal harbor's Dirck Bradt who again took third place.
Winners were:

Men's 15-49 years: 1st, Sheldon Booze,, age 22, Ellsworh, 29 min. 24 sec.; 2nd, Johnathan Howland, 21, Bar Harbor, 27:32; Dirck Bradt, 32 Seal Harbor, 28:03.

Men's 50 and over: Bob McGuire, 55, Hulls Cove, 40:58; Otto Kernberg, 50, Deer Isle, 40:58; Win Arias, 53, New Rochelle, NY, 43:10; Adolph Fuerst, 53, Brooklyn, NY, 48:55.

Women's 14-49: M Dessau, 32, New York City, 33:37; Polly Maguire, 23, Hulls Cove, 34:33; Susan Lawrence, 20, Southwest Harbor, 37:28.

Under 15 boys and girls: Stephen Smith, 14, Ellsworth, 36:31; Michael Kane, 14, Ellsworth, 37:03; Joey Harris, 14, Bar Harbor, 39:33.

Youngest boy to finish: Michael Wright, age 8, Bar Harbor, 42:04.

Youngest girl to finish: Hilary Grace, age 11, Northeast Harbor, 49:10

Saturday's race was organized by a six-person committee: Chris Zamore, Ben Zamore, Sheperd harris, Henry Fox, Rufus Williams Jr. and Alix Hopkins. Official starter was Joe Green, and Bussey Tracy led the way through the village with his 1934 Ford.
