The Marathon by Phidippides
Bangor, Me. March 1, 1980
After a completely open and fairly warm winter, March 1 opened cold and raw. By race time, the temperature had risen to 10 degrees but a fierce 30 MPH wind was howling out of the southwest.
60 hardy souls took off into the teeth of this wind and 47 finished. One bright point was that the wind aided runners during the most open segment of the race. For three miles along route 202 the wind blew at the runners back.
Don Winant won his second marathon and beamed, "I'm not a swimmer who also runs anymore. I'm a runner!"
