Hancock Lobster Classic 10-miler, July 1993

HANCOCK - Jo-Ann Nealey of Northport shattered the course record by 41 seconds, clocking a time of one hour, four minutes and 45 seconds, to win the women's division at the Hancock Lobster Classic 10-miler here Saturday.

Bangor's Patrick Sullivan was the overall race winner with a time of 54 minutes and 37 seconds. Sullivan had won the Bucksport Tour Du Lac 10-miler in June with a time of 55:58.

This was the fifth race in the Bangor Daily News Charities Running Series.

Sullivan was followed across the finish line by Ellsworth's Jim Newett (55:42) and Coopers Mills' Shawn Keenan (56:42).

Second place in the women's division went to Louise Gingras (1:06.54) of Thornhill, Ontario, and third to Bar Harbor's Sue Foster (1:06.59). Nealey finished 19th overall; Gingras was 25th and Foster was 27th.

Gingras won the masters women's class and Brownfield's Bill Reilley (1:02.21, 10th overall) was the masters men's winner.

Ninety-three people finished the race, representing the largest turnout in 10 years.

Nealey, a first-grade teacher at the Peirce School in Belfast, said she felt pretty good going into the race "but this was a fairly slow time for me.

"I didn't feel that great over the first two miles but then I fell into a comfortable pace and the last seven miles were faster for me than the first three," said Nealey. "It was a pretty hard course. It was pretty hilly."

The runners had good racing conditions as they were refreshed by a cool, coastal mist.

"This was the first time I had ever run this race," said the 32-year-old Nealey. "I had heard that, in the past, it was usually run in sunny, 85-degree conditions. We really lucked out, weather-wise."
