Forcast as warm and dry; the day was anything but. Cold, foggy and very windy wasn't bad enough to stop these hardy souls, who raised $130 for the Give Chris (Vincente) a Hand campaign.

800m freestyle, almost flawless.

Son screwed up my lap cards. He didn't put the first one in and then when he did it was on the 63. I had told him before the race, if you mess these up I am not speaking to you all weekend. And when the next number was 65, I thought when I am done this race, I am going to drown you.

Anger took me through the first 200 meters. This was not how I had visualized it, sitting on the deck yesterday and counting my way through them. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, ORANGE.

The swim

I cut my hand deeply on tues before the race so had to keep it dry until race day. I devised a bandage for the race but it mostly fell apart by the halfway point. My biggest fear was striking another swimmer on the palm and opening it up again.

The choice I made was to lay back on the scrum that is the Ironman mass start and try to swim away from the dense inside lane. This would mean a slower split but loosing more blood into the Pacific was not going to help my bike or run.

Sometimes your dreams come true.

The day, the weather, the support, the fans all were nearly perfect. Sure the afternoon run was hot and there was some headwinds on the second bike loop but, no complaints by me.

The swim is a mass start and a first for me in a race this size ~2400 started.
I cannot tell you how many bumps, shoves and blows I recieved and dealt out, it's part of this crazy sport. The worst were kicks to both goggle sockets, a firm kidney punch and a hand/palm in the teeth while I'm turned to take a breath. My 32/1:08 splits were excellent for me as I had hoped for ~1:10.

I rubbed my body marks off in the shower.

I have never done that before. I have always left them to fade, so that for a few days I can catch sight of myself in the mirror and smile, or see the number on my hand when I look at my watch.

Today I do not want to see them. I could not get all of the ink off. They are there, as if done with a cutting quill, nothing more than a painful reminder.
