Running Log Tutorial

Introduction

There are several ways one can keep a running-log. A notebook and pencil works great for a lot of people. Many others invest in running-log software they install on their computer, or use an application that works with a specific heart-rate monitor or watch. Online running-logs are by no means the only option available to you, nor are any two online running-logs the same.

For the sake of simplicity and continuity, Crow Athletics will post links to online running-logs that allow public viewing of user accounts. Not all services provide this option. We can also provide links to individuals' websites, if that is where they post their running-log.

CoolRunning.com is an excellent service that is easy to use. If you don't already use an online running-log, we recommend this one. (To learn why, read the development notes.)

To create and share a running log using CoolRunning.com, follow the instructions below:

Creating a Cool Running Running-Log

  • The first step is to create a user account on CoolRunning.com. Point browser to http://www.coolrunning.com/cgi-bin/register/kick_register.cgi, and complete their registration form. Be sure to enter a valid email address, as this is where your user password will be sent. (You will need to have cookies enabled on your browser, for this to work.)
  • When complete, your member password will be assigned and sent to your email address. After you retrieve it, log-in to CoolRunning.com, and click on Edit your profile.
  • You might consider changing your password to something easier to remember. Do this by clicking on "Vital Stats" and completing the form. (This will of course neccesitate your logging-in again.)
  • There are several account options you can explore, but for now, click on the "Running Log" link. This is where you set your running log preferences, including date and time formats, distance units, favorite routes, running shoes, etc. You can alter these preferences at any time. They are not permanent.
  • To share your log with others, check the appropriate box, and assign a "sharing password." This password can be anything, but should be something other than your account password, since you will be divulging it to other people. By sharing your running-log password, others will have the ability to view your running log, and only your running log. They will not have the ability to alter your preferences or change your account settings.
  • When you have saved your running-log preferences, email your account username and "sharing password" to the Webmaster. Include your log's creation date and a brief note that might be helpful to prospective viewers. (How often you update, your "pack-position", primary race distance, etc.) This information will be included on the table in the running-log section.
